Harris Coller Obituary

COLLER, III, HARRIS ALTON, age 7, passed away on November 5, 2003. Harris was born on May 19, 1996 in Anderson, South Carolina and moved to Miami at the age of 2 1/2 years old. Harris was strong, not just in physical appearance but Harris was inwardly strong. He was a deep thinker, a fast learner, he was self-assured, capable and secure. Above all, he relished the love of his parents the most, with a tad more love thrown in for one very large dog named Maggie. Harris' inner and outer strengths were obvious to those given the privilege to enter his world. Whether at home or in the hospital questioning his doctors, nurses or technical staff at Miami Children's Hospital on their procedures. After all, how seriously can anyone take medical professionals who can eat more candy than the kids? The candy bag in Harris' room helped assure a constant repeat of visitors without medical intentions. There should have been a prize for which visitor, nurse, or doctor ate the most candy. For some unknown reason, Harris loved anything Chinese. You name it, and if it looked and smelled Chinese, he loved it. Pictures, food, chopsticks, costuming, even slippers. Maybe that is where his love of his favorite color - Red - began. Harris was unique. He kept close tabs on those around him, though you might not have realized it at the time. No one, but no one, would slip-up on his watch. We will all remember those big, honey colored eyes, his cute little "Southern" accent and his God-given uniqueness. Harris was a 2nd grade student at Merrick Educational Center. Harris was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church where he was very active in the Cherub Choir and Sunday School. Survived by his loving parents, Jan and Hank Coller; grandmother Jennie Coller of the home and Nannie Hazel of Anderson, South Carolina; Ann Farmer (Aunt) and Tim Smith (Uncle); April, Christopher, Adrian, Anna Grace, Jacob and Jonathan (Cousins) of Anderson, South Carolina. Visitation 7-9 p.m. on Friday, November 7, 2003 at Van Orsdel, Coral Gables. Services Saturday, November 8, 2003 at 1:00 p.m., Christ the King Lutheran Church, 11295 SW 57th Avenue, Miami, FL 33156. Burial Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery, 11411 NW 25th Street. I just wanted you to know that I was thinking about you and do on a regular basis. I know your pain all to well and know what it's like when the one year anniversary is here (11/5/03). I can hear Harris' voice right now, that beautiful, elegant southern draw. Harris is remembered by my family and will never be forgotten. Take care Jan and God Bless.

I just now got the time to go and re-look at Harris's Obit. My goodness you did such a wonderful job of writing it and summarizing what a wonderful little boy Harris was. That was beautiful.

Dear Jan and Hank,

Harris was such the Little Man- no, I take that back- THE MAN- from the very beginning: good manners, both mature and smart with a very sweet personality- strong and tough, but with a big heart, bright smile, and beautiful eyes- and you could see that never changed once he left Anderson. We could see that in the pictures you sent from Florida, which my Mom framed and put around the house so we could watch Harris as he grew. Harris' strength reminds me of one of my favorite passages, 2nd Timothy's 4:6, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; there is laid up for me the crown which the Lord will give me on that day." Harris fought the good fight and taught those of us who thought we were "experienced in life" totally new, better ways to live- even those of us weren't lucky enough to be around him for most of his seven years- he touched us all and he'll continue to touch others through us and through your caringbridge website. Thank you for sharing Harris with us through visits, pictures, emails, and stories- we hope you will continue to do so.

All our love, Shaw and Linda

I will always cherish the memories of the time I spent with my precious grandson when I came to visit.

He always wanted me to play with him in his room.He loved to play army with his GI Joe's.He always reminded me that he was going to drive a big tank like his uncle Tim.He would give his GI's a bath after fighting with the bad guys.(bubble bath all over the bathroom)We always played with race cars. He loved to play "country store". We would buy and sell goodies.Harris was always in charge of the cash register. He liked the money part

I will always remember when he lost his first tooth. It fell into his pajama pocket by accident. We searched the white carpet all over before he finally found it and showed it to Mom. I will miss you

Dear Jan and Hank,

I still remember the first time I met Harris. You guys were in 306B. I had just transferred on this unit. Our first meeting did not go so well. Thank God and Harris that most all of our others did! I loved your little man so much! He has taught me to be a better person. Jan, you and Harris taught me how to be a better nurse! And Jan, you taught me how to be a better mom! Thank you so much for allowing me to be part of your life together. I do consider you to be a part of my family! I love you all, and I pray each day that God will bless you and keep you and Hank as safe as He is Harris. If I know Harris at all, he is probably telling Him how to make things a little better up there as well as down here! I know he is watching over all of us! I feel Harris with me each time I access a port--"Now remember, DON'T count!" I love you! Kathi

Dear Jan, I was so shocked to hear of Harris' death through Ann. I cannot imagine the loss you must feel and I don't have the vocabulary to express my sympathy. I regret that I never got to meet him and it was obviously my loss. Harris must have truly been a special little man whose short life touched many very deeply. I'll remember you in my prayers.

Jan and Hank,

Harris touched many people, and in so many ways. He was a take-charge precious child of God and placed his imprint on life. I remember his love for everything Chinese and the many takeout meals that resulted. Chopsticks were second-nature to Harris; I could only manage the fortune cookies. I pray that Christ's arms enfold and comfort you both during this time. You are held by many in thoughts of deepest care and love.

Jan and Hank:

Dear Jan, Hank, Nanny Hazel & Ginny

Harris came to me at a very difficult time in my life. He helped me to smile and laugh again when I didn't think I could. Besides myself he brought joy and inspiration to all who knew him. He was such an amazing boy. Thank you for allowing him to be such a special part of my life. I will cherish all of the good times he and I had together forever. I will truly miss his beautiful smile, his eyes, his silly faces, his kindness, generosity and his sweet little voice and most definitely his beautiful artwork on my arm with the green permanent marker. He was an Angel on Earth and now he is an Angel in Heaven. I look forward to seeing him again in Heaven and I only hope that he can tell me some funny stories about Danny. Please know that I loved him very much and I am sorry for your loss. I am here for you now and always. Love, Teri

Thanks to the both of you for sharing him with me, and I hope to spend much more time with you both. As you know, my prayers are with Harris (not that he needs them) and with you.

To the mother and father of Harris,

I am a father of a 7 year old boy just like Harris and an 11 year old daughter as well. My heart goes out to you during this unimaginable time of pain and suffering. I too was saddened deeply by the news which I just read, although I never met Harris, I knew him of him through the pictures in the internet, and story's from the nurses that loved him at Community Blood Center in Miami Childrens Hospital. I too donated plasma for almost 1 1/2 years for Harris, and I got such a kick from knowing that I was helping your little boy in my own private way. God Bless you both, and if I may be of any help, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for giving all of us at Island Dolphin Care the chance to meet and play with Harris! When he came for camp this summer he asked me - will Squirt remember me? I told him that I thought that she would- and we all think that she did! Harris said to me - "Miss Deena thanks so much for your help but I can do this myself!" and I watched in awe as this cute sweet ,brave child held onto Squirt's dorsal fin and off they went around the lagoon together! The whole ride I could hear his squealing cute southern accent.."I did it , I did it all by myself!" He laughed out loud and made everyone smile around him. Dear Jan and Hank,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. We only knew of Harris and his story for a brief while, but the impact he has made on our family is so immense. Those big smiling eyes peeking out under the brim of his South Florida cap stole our hearts the very first time we laid eyes on him. The twinkle so bright you knew instantly of his enormous spirit- it literally lept right off the page!!

Your caringbridge entry tells of such a peaceful passing- a caress on the cheek for the mommy who loves him more than any words could ever tell, and embraced by the comfort of his parents. Jan, you are so selfless in your ability to give that beautiful boy of yours back to God.

Just as Harris is wrapped in God's loving and gentle arms, I pray that you both feel His warm embrace, too.

You are in our prayers and thoughts.

I will never forget his little voice

Although I was never close to Harris as other people were. I'm glad that I had the chance of working with him and getting to know him, since he was coming to the hospital. Jan you are in my thoughts and I will be praying for you and your family , so that He can help you be strong. In this very rough time in your life. I can not imagine what you are going thru , but I know it must be very hard.

If you ever need anything even to talk, please e-mail me.

Take care

JB.

Jan & Hank,

Words can not express what a special boy you had. He made every day brighter in everyone's life who came in contact with him. His spirit and smile will forever live within me. He made me a better nurse and person. I love and will miss him very much. Harris will forever be an angel in everyone's life.

Whats 10,000 times 10,000? Some of my fondest memories of Harris were his ability to stump me on my mutliplication. It didn't matter what time of day it was, each and every time I would see him, he would say whats 5 times 12, 15 times 15 etc. Then, when I didn't know the answer he would give me an even harder one. Boy did this make him laugh!

Harris has touched my life in a way that noone ever has. The joyous times we shared will be greatly missed. I will miss him dearly.

With all my love!

Susan

Jan and Hank,

I am so sorry to hear about Harris and wish there was something I could say that would make it easier for you. You should be very proud of how he handled all of what life threw at him and what a tough and smart little guy he must have been. My thoughts are with you.

It was a pleasure to know Harris. As a volunteer at Radio Lollipop at Miami Childrens Hospital, Harris was such a great kid to work with. God Bless you and your family.

I only met Harris a few times in person. I was there when he was born and I saw what joy he brought to both of his parents, Jan and Hank. He was indeed their shining star. I knew Harris through pictures and letters that his mother sent to me through email. I was taken by those beautiful eyes and incredible smile that shown through on every picture. My dear friends, Jan and Hank, will hold him in their hearts forever...thank you so much for sharing his life with me. He touched me too.
