Eric Jones Obituary

Eric "Rick" Jones

Eric "Rick" Jones, age 65, of Green, passed away June 16, 2014.

He was the loving husband for 35 years of Barb (nee Kline); proud father of Nathan and Sara (Mark) Titus; and dear brother of Alisa (John) Charles. He also leaves behind many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, and longtime friends.

He was a proud graduate of Buchtel High School in 1966 and The University of Akron in 1970 with a degree in Secondary Education.

Rick absolutely loved to teach and was proud to say he was a teacher. He loved and nurtured the many kids he influenced over the years. "Mr. Jones" was a beloved educator in the Barberton School District for two years and then joined the Coventry Local School district for 34 years, retiring in 2006. He wanted to convey his passion for history and government and his love for his country to his junior high and high school students.

Rick was very involved in teacher association activities at the local and state levels and served as the Vice President of the Ohio Education Association from 1982-1986. He loved classic cars and was a proud owner who won numerous awards for his 1957 Thunderbird and his 1986 Mustang. After retirement, he really enjoyed serving as a tour guide at MAPS (Military Air Preservation Society) in North Canton in keeping with his interest in World War II and military aviation.

Nothing gave him greater pleasure than coaching his children's baseball and softball teams and attending his children's many sporting events. He was a very proud father of his children's athletic and academic achievements.

Rick was an avid Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes fan. It is his family's belief that he will personally engineer a Super Bowl win for the Browns someday from above.

He was proud of his Albanian heritage and was an active member of the American Albanian's Men's Club. He was also passionate about rock and roll and firmly believed that the best music was produced in 1966. He enjoyed reading, working on his yard, keeping his cars spotlessly clean (Fords only), and family vacations at Hilton Head.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Faye.

Family will receive friends Friday, June 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the CATAVOLOS FUNERAL HOME, 3653 West Market Street, Fairlawn, where funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Rick's name to MAPS (Military Air Preservation Society), 2260 International Parkway, North Canton OH 44720.

I had the great privilege of knowing Rick for over 50 years. We played peewee ball together at Maple Valley. Then we graduated together from The University of Akron. Over the years Rick's infectious enthusiasm and sparkling zest for life was an inspiration. He truly was a remarkable man. I would love to talk to you in person sometime. I hated history, until I had the priviledge of having Mr. Jones as my teacher. He had a very unique way of teaching that made this very boring subject very interesting. I still remember to this day what he said and the techniques he used to help us remember what he was teaching. I enjoyed his class, which is saying alot since I hated school. Heaven has received a wonderful person and teacher. He will be truely missed.

Barb, Nathan and Sara
I was shocked and saddened to learn of Rick's death. My memories of Rick go back to elementary school. He was always a great guy and well respected. It was heartwarming to read all the tributes from his many students over the years. May you find comfort in their words and all your happy memories. As time passes, may the pain of Rick's untimely passing lessen for all of you. You are in my prayers.

When my son got his schedule for 9th grade, I told him that he will have my favorite teacher this year. I wouldn't tell him his name, as I wanted him to tell me after that first day. He came home that afternoon and told me, " It was Mr. Jones, wasn't it?" I told him, he was absolutely right! He became my sons favorite teacher also. He was by far the kindest, most interesting teacher I ever had through school, and I am saddened by his passing. May he forever rest in peace knowing that he inspired so many of us that passed through his classrom.

I had the pleasure of being a student in Mr. Jones' history class in middle and high school. He made me feel important in his class everyday. He would sing "Denise" by Randy and the Rainbows when I walked in and therefore nicknamed me "Shooby-do." As a teacher myself, I aspire to achieve the greatness that is mentioned all over this guest book. I only hope my students will say some of the wonderful remarks that I have read here. Mr. Jones was a wonderful educator full of passion for the art of teaching. He will always be remembered. As I teach my students...."Goverment For, By, and Of The PEEEEople!" Class of 1987

I was in Mr. Jone's first class at Erwine. He was a wonderful teacher, not just because he could teach, but because he cared for his students. I went through a very difficult loss that year and even though he didn't know it, he helped me a great deal. I have thought of him often over the years. I want to thank his family for sharing him with us and for the lovely pictures that speak of a life well lived. My prayers are with you at this time.

My condolences to the family. I graduated from Buchtel with Rick. It was nice to read all the messages and look at the photos. It was nice to see a posting from Stevie-J. Rick played football at Buchtel and at the football awards assembly, the players did a synchronized knee crossing for which they got in trouble. I think Rick was the ring leader of this prank. At Simon Perkins Junior High School, during lunch one day, he was walking down the hall and flipping his arms and hands around and set off the fire alarm. There was chaos in the cafeteria. He quickly admitted his guilt and did not get in trouble. At Perkins, he did the high jump using the scissors style. At one of the reunions, he told me his mother taught that method. Rick will be missed at the next reunion.

We are tremendously saddened by Rick's death and hope the heartfelt sympathies we send to Barb, Nathan, and Sara will help at the beginning of this difficult time and the times to come. Tony enjoyed negotiating with Rick and learning from the "pro".
Be blessed always. Barb, Nathan, and Sara, please contact us if you need anything.

My wife and I both walked the hallways of Erwine Middle School back in the mid 70's and I remember the enthusiasm Mr. Jones had every day. Barb, Nathan, Sara, Lisa, and all family and friends, words cannot express the feelings of sorrow upon hearing of Rick's passing. For almost 60 years Rick was the best friend I could possibly have wanted. He was so very special. He will be dearly missed by many.

To the Jones Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Mr Jones was a wonderful man and Teacher. We loved to listen to his stories and passion for History. He will be missed by all who knew him. I wish there was something I could say that could help ease your pain, but I cannot. Just remember that time heals and he will send you signs all of the time. My prayers are with your family.
