Coach Tyree is one of the teachers you remember forever. One of my memories is from PE Class. There he stood with all his muscles telling the boys, "You will learn to square dance, and you'll have fun." And of course they did..

To this day I benefit from the life lessons I learned from coach Tyree. It was a blessing to have known him.

I am late to responding to this as I just saw this site.

Nevertheless, even many months after Coach's passing, words and thoughts are still hard to express. I was with Rick Hanna and we both stopped by to see Coach at Silver Lake when I was in town last summer. He was his usual effervecent self.

To say he will be missed is stating the obvious.

God Bless and Keep you Coach!

What an example of strength and encouragement. He was a walking example of a man with a desire to live life to the fullest and will be held in the hearts of the many he touched.

Jay,JaneAnne & Leslie,
I was with your dad at the original Waterloo Drive-In, the night he met your mom, Donna Archer.
We pulled up beside a carload of girls, got out and started talking to them while waiting on our food order.
I remember distinctly, after just a few minutes of small talk, your dad told your mom,"I'm going to marry you". And, he did. He wasn't one to mince words and was goal oriented. We had a lot of fun life guarding at Munroe Falls Park.
I even spent time in his Health class, as an observer, while attending KSU. At the time, he had the boys bringing in a pair of their father's shoes to shine in order to show their appreciation of their fathers. Larry Czonka was one of the students.
Your dad is in good hands today...the hands are huge!
Give a "Hello" to your Uncle Bill for me.

Again I want to thank you for the honor to stand and speak for your Dad at his memorial. As I've said, " I know my life would not be what it is today without Coach," I know as I move forward, I will hold myself to an even highter standard because of Coach, I miss him so much already it is heart breaking. I can only imagine how all of you feel! My thoughts are always with you.

I read a quote the other day that could have been written by Coach:

Do what is necessary!Then
Do what is possible! And
you may have a shot at doing
what you think is impossible!

Dallas had Landry
Greenbay had Lombardi
We had Coach!

Dear Jay, Janie and Leslie
Your dad's memorial service was the most exemplary and loving tribute honoring a father like yours and his life. Uncle Bill and I sat in awe at how many lives he truly touched by all those who shared the memories and meaningful service by Pastor John and those who spoke. We all reminisce about time spent with him but just know he's forever "locked" in our hearts along with your mom.

We love you and are proud of you and your families. His life lives on through all of you and we cherish that.
Love, Aunt Joan and Uncle Bill

Jay, Janeann & Leslie,

I recently refereed the Stow girls tournament game at Ellet (Ironically), and they had a moment of silence for your Father. This is the very first time I heard about his passing. I went home and told Carla about it and just broke down in tears, due to the fact I could not pay propper and timely honor to "coaches" passing. I don't think anyone truly knows what your Father did for me in my life. He is probably one of the reasons I am still alive, have a daughter and two wonderful, healthy Grandchildren. I did not have much of a stable childhood due to my ailing Father and not much of a strong, consistent support element. Coach would allow me to be part of Sundy night open gym, when I was much to young to play ball with the older guys and they did not want me around much either. Your Father always accepted me and included me in things that other people wouldn't. There have been very few "Great Men" to the truest definition I had the pleasure to meet. I traveled to 17 countries and all 50 states abroad and there was only two men I would even say were as giving to my life as my Father was. One was Glenn Howe and the other was your Dad, "The Coach", one of my saviors. Without seeing your Dad much after high school their was always a reserved place in my heart for him and always will be. I can say I loved him like a Father and at a very needed part of my life he was my Angel watching over me in a most turbulant time in my young life. I will never forget him and like my Father, which has been gone 33 years, a day will never go by for the rest of my life, I will not stop and think about him.

God Bless you all and thank you for sharing your Father with me and all the other's in his life.

Leslie, Janeanns, and Jay,
We are so grateful that we have known and worked with your dad. What an inspriation he was to all who met him!!!!! He had such enthusiam and zeal for life. We regret that we were unable to attend his memorial as we were in Palm Springs, CA. Please forgive us. For me personally, I will never forget how excited Jim was to learn how to sew men's briefs, especially his "leopard print ones"
Our love and prayers are with you all.

Jay, Jane Ann & Lesley,

Now that I've had time to digest and reflect on Coach's passing, I need to reiterate (your Dad's favorite word at one time) that you were very fortunate to have had such extraordinary parents. I loved them both. Words cannot do them justice.
As you probably know, your Dad was very special to me and although I disappointed him more than once, he never gave up on me or anyone else for that matter. I thank him for his life's lessons and the fond memories we shared. He was my hero.

May peace and pride be with you always.

Coach Tyree molded an entire generation. He made us believe in ourselves. The respect and sometimes fear he commanded placed a stamp in our hearts that will last forever because we know he cared. Thank you for sharing your Dad with all of us!
February 22, 2011
Jim "Tiger" Tyree aka All-Metro and many other nicknames he provided for you but could back up twice on Sunday and blind folded. A man's man by every definition. He pulled more guts out of young men's efforts than anybody I have ever met.

I had the pleasure to see Jim very recently while at my grandmother's funeral. It was just like him to show up, in pain himself, but giving time and love for others by doing things - not just talking about them.

One fond memory of countless others: One day he looked particularly upset and when that happens you didn't dare blink.
The entire phys ed class was ordered to the locker room. Beads of sweat popped out everywhere but it turned out we were to get a most unusual lecture.

He grabbed out attention immediately with silence. Not words. That's command in action. And then he proceeded to retell a story about seeing a woman being assaulted on the streets of Akron. Coach didn't hesitate as he recalled how he pulled down the road past the situation, crossed the street, and then circled back to sneak up on the guy attacking the woman.

He yelled out to get his attention then cold cocked him into the next century and then quickly made it on past to his car to get away. He had given the lady a chance to get away and he escaped possible jail (even if he was in the right he knew the risks).

And then he asked us point blank: "Make up your mind right now! If you should see something like that ever happening, next week or next year, next decade, what will you do? Because if you hesitate, someone could die." And then he stormed out.

We sat baffled beyond belief staring at each other with goggle eyes but those words resonated like a gong and I made up my mind right then to move with decisiveness if something awful or dangerous should ever happen where I could do something. And I have.
So, dear Tyree family, know that your Dad has helped literally thousands of people directly - but also indirectly as well. And all for the better! That was just like Coach to figure out how best to leverage his influence among young men. God bless you Coach. First game of 1-on-1 is mine some day. I might have a chance then.

Never having Coach as a coach gave me the chance to see him as the educator and man he was. I remember him as a kid at Renner's and then as a student in gym class. He was one of the fairest and most honest men I ever knew. You always knew where you stood with coach and I believe he knew where he stood with me. Thanks coach for helping to mold me into the man I am today! Ritz Stow high class of '83

"Coach" touched so many lives in so many ways for generations! As a teacher he was extremely respected, as he went beyond what was normally expected of an educator. I knew him in high school as a teacher and then was fortunate to know him later as I became an adult on a professional level, where I was proud to call him a friend. Jim you will be truly missed ... this world was a better place because of you. My condolences are extended to your family.

It was an honor to know Coach Tyree. He had a great sense of humor. I will miss him.
February 21, 2011
Dear Jay, JaneAnn, Leslie,
It's hard not to think think of you as little kids running around Munroe Falls Park! As you grew to adults you shared your dad with so many of us. We called him Coach, but regarded him as a "dad," looking to him for strength, moral direction and a sense of humor. Your mom was an angel and watching them together was an inspiration.
My most sincere condolences to you and a prayer that you find peace knowing he did his best to make the world a better place to live.
February 21, 2011
I first knew Coach Tyree when he was our neighbor here on Sears Rd. I then remember him as lifeguard at Renners (Munroe Falls Lake) and as the boy's coach at SHS. Coach was a good man and an admirable person. Deepest sympathies to the Tyree family. Linda (Lohmann) Knapp, Class of '69

Coach Tyree was the definition of a Stow Bulldog. He had a positve impact on my myself and my brothers, and everyone else he came into contact with. He always greeted my family with a big genuine smile and strong handshake. His open gym nights, done on his time, were priceless years. Last year, I saw him at one of the Stow basketball games, where he prompty challenged me to a one on one basketball game, albiet his "new" rules. We will miss you Coach Tyree, a man amongst man, and a friend to all. My deepest prayers go out to the Tyree family, especially Jay who I knew the best. Coach is probably in heaven now shooting some free throws with my dad.

We truly loved this man, and I know that puts us in the vast majority of folks who ever met him. What a great coach, teacher, and example for his Lord. We will miss him, but it is great to know he is now in a better place.

Dear Jay, Janeann, Leslie and Family. The Memorial Service for your father and for everyone's Coach was absolutely wonderful, beautiful and inspiring. With the recent passing of my father, along with Coach's passing has been an emotional time for me. I'm so fortunate that I could be at his Memorial. I've attached a photo of your father as I will always remember him. He will be sadly missed. All my love and deepest sympathy to you and your family members.

To the Tyree Family-
The development of my character as a young man was a blueprint instilled by Coach. He was my friend, my confident, and my mentor when I needed it the most.

I will never forget Coach's imprint on my life and I am truly thankful to him and your whole family for the times we shared together, at school, at home, and at the Lake.

I love James Tyree. I am certain God has set aside a special task for Coach. I can't wait to get there to see him again. God Bless all of you and my heart will always have a special place for Coach and the Tyree family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Jay, JaneAnn, Leslie and family, we were so deeply moved by the inspirational memorial service for Coach. It was overwhelming to see the impact his life has had on so many people, including ours. What can I say, next to my father he was the greatest man I have ever known, he carried himself a man unto him self, yet willing to share his knowledge and pardon the expression " balls" to his students, he worked hard, loved life, and was always there for his students, a "Rock to stand upon". I played soccer for the man, and he was unstoppable on the field, he was my idol, yet he called me "soccer king". I had to pass on soccer. cross country, and baskteball, my senior year due to pay to play, yet 30 years later I come to Silver Lake to visit my coach and fish, he always welcomed me as family. I do not have the words, nor can I pretent to, he was one of a kind, and I will miss him more than he can ever know. He was my friend.... Steve Kaza & the Kazaklan I will miss my friend.

My condolences to the Tyree family. Coach had a great impact on me and I was always amazed and admired his tenacity in all things that he decided to do. I will fondly remember his advice given to me as a wrestler, as a wrestling coach and as a father. My sons and I will always remember the Boat House talks in Silver Lake. God Bless You Coach!

I am so sorry for your loss. Coach Tyree touched everyone he ever met. I have known him since the mid 70s when my brother wrestled for him. Every time we saw each other, he would challenge me to a chin up contest or want to arm wrestle. He will be greatly missed.
February 18, 2011
Some of my best high school memories are of the summers I spent working as a life guard at Silver Lake. When you get to know Mr. Tyree you get to learn (wind surfing, roller blading, Kayaking, sailing. etc) and yah you might get yelled at; you get to laugh; you get life lessons; you get "fellowship" as he called it. He was always extending an invitation of some kind or another - but you could be sure that everyone would have a great time. He took the time to attend my wedding in 2000 even though his wife was ill. He was a wonderful man, a great example - my words don't really do him justice. I was fortunate to know him and even though the thought of his passing makes me sad - I still smile. How can you think of him and not smile?

He has been an ongoing influence in my life and an inspiration not only to me but also to my brothers and sisters. His life was an example to us all and we are all better people for having had the opportunity to share in his life. Thank you for sharing Coach with us through all these years.

What a man. Jim was one of the few who i had the utmost respect for. One of my best memories in gym class (1972/73/74) was when he had us doing differnet types of escapes. climbing walls throwing each other over a wall( that was me!) two guys hands locked my feet in hands they tossed me while i pushed off and a bunch of guys twenty or so feet away catching me..well we did it so well they almost threw me over them into the wall!!! i think it was the only time i saw jim look a bit worried!! funny..and the time he pushed my face all over the wrestling mat and he really enjoyed it a lot more than me..thanks for great memories jim...

There are no words to describe what an honor it is to have known Jim Tyree! I know he would laugh, but when you were in his presence you just knew you were with someone who's influence was far greater than he allowed you to acknowledge. What a character! When I think of him I smile . . . what a great way to be remembered.

When I think back to my years at Stow High (1968 grad), one of the first memories that comes to mind is Coach Tyree. He was a huge and positive presence for all the students. As adults, we still cherish our good fortune for having had him lead and mentor us. He touched so many, and we all should look to him as a role model for positively influencing those around us now...paying it forward would be an appropriate demonstration of appreciation and an honor to his legacy.

I graduated from Stow in 1964. I wrestled under Coach's guidance. I also learned alot about growing up from him. You have to ask "how many young men did Coach point in the right direction?" Coach was a great Christian man. He will be missed.

There is little left to be said about the wonderful man we all knew in Coach Tyree. I remember his ability to recall family members. Even though my family was not involved in sports, several years ago I ran into Coach and he asked about my siblings - by name! He was an inspiration to all and he will be missed. Heaven is a much sweeter place. May the assurance that we will see him again some day bring your entire family much peace through this difficult time.

"Rest in Peace"... Wait a minute... Somehow that just doesn’t sound right... Coach Tyree was happiest when he was DOING something... And he was ALWAYS doing something... Always doing something constructive... Always doing something to teach, to help, or to encourage... Always doing something to make each person feel useful and cared about... Yet never looking for anything in return, other than maybe hoping we’d learned a little something about life... And we did. Undoubtedly thousands of us did... just through his solitary, unselfish example...

I just KNOW that he’s picked up in Heaven right where he left off – looking to DO something to help: perhaps by mending an angel’s wings, or teaching the finer points of cloud-surfing, or discussing the art of wrestling with Jacob... But he’s keeping busy...

In truth, he always will be doing something... through the lives of his children and grandchildren... and through the lives of those he taught, coached, assisted, comforted, or befriended... each of us has been blessed by Coach’s influence, and we will continue to carry his memory in our hearts. I hope each of us will follow his example and DO something, too... Something to serve the Lord... Something to help each other... Something to make Coach proud... until we meet again!

When I think of Mr Tyree I always get a smile and think of how proud I am to know him. He was my teacher at Stow HS along with teaching my brothers and my dad. We were fortunate to reconnect with him again when we moved to Silver Lake and now my children have also been blessed to know him. We all love Popeye and will truly miss him. As others have written, there are few people in life that leave that lasting impression and Mr. Tyree certainly did to my family. What a truly amazing man, a legend, who touched thousands of lives with memories that will last forever. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Jay & family, we just heard the news today and our hearts go out to you all. My father has always considered him to be a great man and a great friend and worked with him for many years at Stow High and Silver Lake. My thoughts and prayers are with you. All I can say it what a wonderful Man... I'm sure that is what everyone has said that knew Coach Tyree. Coach you will truly be missed by everyone that knew you and all the lives you have touched. Thanks for letting me and Lisa train with the wrestling team, that was pretty cool, only you would let us do that. You were awesome and I will never forget you. Thanks for all the hugs at the basketball games. You always stood for what was right and that even meant you giving up coaching which is what you loved to do. I'll miss you and I'm sorry that I never came down to the lake to learn how to wind sail. Miss you and love you with all my heart. Thanks for everything!!! : ) Michele Massa Smith

Sometime around 1976 I was standing next to Coach in the Lakeview gym while the basketball team was getting ready for practice. Well out of bounds and a long way from the basket, Coach was teasing the basketball players about their "Sissy" sport. "Real athletes are on my wrestling team!" "Nice shorts." Things like that. "Basketball is so easy. You want a challenge, come on over to the wrestling mats." "Anybody can play basketball... Anybody.... It's boring... too easy for me." With that he grabbed a basketball from the rack by the wall. From where he stood, it was a long way to the basket. A long, long way. And the angle was absolutely terrible. Most of us would need to be able to curve the ball around the backboard, or get some help from a stiff wind. But Coach never hesitated. He launched the ball in a perfect arc, and it sailed, and sailed, and sailed some more. Swoooooosh!!!! Nothing but net! One awesome man. One awesome coach. One awesome leader. And one awesome legend of a man.

Vis et Virtus, Coach!

About seven years ago, I decided to purchase a new furnace to replace one that pushing fifty-years old. Because parts for the old furnace were hard to find, my dad recommended that I donate my leftover parts (filters and a humidifier pad) to Brandon Heating in Stow.

I did just that, and as I walked in I saw Coach Tyree sitting down talking with some friends, including the owner. My business lasted a few minutes, but I quickly became engaged in the conversation and soon found myself pulling up a chair next to Coach. Now, I knew Coach Tyree through my dad, Jim Van Gilder, as well as our mutual love for the sport of wrestling. Even so, we carried on like next-door neighbors for a good 25-30 minutes.

When I finally left, I remember have a big smile on my face while I shook my head back and forth thinking to myself, “What a nice guy!!!” That’s the last time I saw him. But I’ll certainly never forget him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.

"Coach" made so many of us better people by teaching us to work hard and do the right thing, and through that he has made the world a better place. I know that even after my school days at Stow I am compelled to do my very best in work and fun because of the fundamentals that came from "Coach". He will be missed and remembered by all who knew him.
I was blessed to have had him in my life and I am a better man because of him. Thank you "Coach".

Dear Jay, Janeann, Leslie and family: Your father was a very special man. My sincerest sympathies to all of you for he leaves a tremendous absence. Coach was one of my most influential teachers. He modeled character, self-discipline, and integrity. He was an example who motivated many of us to push ourselves way beyond our own limited expectations. The legacy he left is reflected in the many comments preceding mine. I pray that the sadness of Coach's passing is comforted by the assurance that Coach Tyree is in the presence of his Lord and Savior and that you will all get to fellowship with him again.

I coasted through high school but was always on my best behavior and tried my hardest when Coach Tyree was around. I was not an athlete but he inspired me as much as he did each of his wrestlers and gym class students.

Coach told me I was strong for such a skinny girl and in retrospect I'm not sure he was talking about my pull up prowess. At Renners he encouraged me to stop floating all over the lake and swim; in school to get off the bleachers and play. I know the waltz and fox trot because of co-ed gym classes and I know that the lessons I learned from Coach Tyree were not limited to athletics and physical fitness.

Jay, Janeann, Leslie and your families-- thank you for sharing your father and grandfather with us. He will always remain a very special man for so many.
February 16, 2011
What a Great Man! My sister and I spent many times with him playing one bounce volleyball. We used our hands and all he ever used was his feet! I think we only beat him once. (I think he let us win)!
He made us all want to be better.
Our prayers go out to you and may you be comforted with all the wonderful memories of so many that he touched.
February 16, 2011
To the Tyree family, I am sorry about the passing of your father, grandfather, and friend. I sincerely appreciate the example he provided.

I think every so often, people cross paths with someone they sense are very special - even upon a chance or casual encounter - and seem to never forget them. My guess is that Mr. Tyree was like that to everyone who ever met him - casually or otherwise - in and out of sports. EVERY kid should be fortunate enough to have a 'Coach Tyree' in their growing years.

As has already been written many times, thank you for sharing him. He was and will always be, the solid face of Stow High School. I'm grateful for the privilege of having known him. I'll be praying for your rest and ease as only God can give and thank you (and him) once again. (class of 1984).

There was nonthing that Coach could not do. He was strong, fearless, kind, loving, and willing to do help every one.. That is our Superman of Stow!! Your father will be missed and never forgotten. Coach James G. All-Metro Tiger Tyree.

Who among us did not have a smile spring to our lips upon seeing him? Who among us do not emulate him in some way?

He loved to compete and win but winning was too small a goal for him. He had something larger in mind for his athletes – to become men. Men who would be faithful to our families, loyal, humble, and honest. Men who would labor hard and find fellowship in work and play.

He was always teaching, dedicated to alumni, focused on preparation.

He cherished his lovely bride Donna. The shelf in our living room is graced by a Bible signed by dear friends on our wedding day. One of the entries reads, "May your years be as happy as ours! - Mr. and Mrs. Coach."

We thank God that he blessed us by placing Coach in our lives.

“Because of God’s great love, even when we were dead in trespasses and sin, He made us alive together with Christ and raised us up with Him, and seated us in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

We comfort ourselves in this assurance that Coach is seated in heaven beholding His Savior. Amen!

Mr. Tyree was a legend. Truly one of those rare renaissance men with a heart of gold... and arms of steel! Always an inspiration, he never met a challenge that he could not conquer. I called him "Popeye" and he was a delight to know over the many years that I have known him and the summers spent at Silver Lake Park. The boathouse will never be the same without his dedication, love and hard work. He sorely missed his wife and granddaugher. My heart is comforted knowing that he is dancing with them in Heaven. My prayers and condolences to his entire family. There is a new twinkle in the sky tonight and I know it is Popeye. A new star in the heavens smiling down on all who knew and loved him so much.

I have such wonderful memories of Coach Tyree. I started going to wrestling matches with my dad in the 70's. I loved talking to Coach Tyree after the match and was eager to tell him that I knew all the weight classes and who wresteled at that weight. I never saw my dad respect anyone the way he did Coach Tyree so even as a young child I knew he was someone special. I was always in such awe of him and I truely believed he was a real life Popeye. The best memories I have of him was going to his house and listening to stories of my dad growing up and seeing the home movies of when he coached my dad and cousin.

He truely was an amazing man who made everyone he met a better person for knowing him.
February 15, 2011
He woke up every day to serve. Coach's life goal was to effect change in the lives of others. His community of friends was vast because he never met an individual he didn't want to help. It was only fitting that his heart gave out because he served more than anyone we have ever known. His Master was Jesus who instructed us to believe with our hearts and serve with our hearts. He was the unofficial Mayor of Stow and his fame at the high school will continue to be legendary. He is admired for his strength: of character, mind, and body; and his passion: for life, family, friends, students, and God.
Janeann, Jay, Leslie, and your families, we are blessed to have been his colleagues and friends. We are sorry to miss the memorial service but will look at the mountains here in Palm Desert, CA, and see your dad climbing to Heaven.
February 15, 2011
So sorry for your loss. Coach Tyree has left a wonderful legacy to all of us who passed through the Stow schools all those many years. May God comfort you all during this difficult time.
February 15, 2011
My thoughts and prayers go out the the Tyree Family in this time of sorrow. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. Integrity, honesty, kindness, fairness, faith...leader, teacher, mentor, friend. There are very few people who enrich our lives that not only exemplify but embrace these qualities and roles - Coach Tyree is certainly one of those few. Simply put, Coach is one of the most repected and greatest men I have known. He will be missed but many wonderful memories will live on forever of the man affectionately known as COACH. God bless.

Janeann, Leslie, Jay and family, We are saddened to hear of your loss and wanted to let you know that you are all in our hearts and prayers. Your dad is what made Stow such a wonderful place to grow up and to know he touched so many lives is a very wonderful feeling. Although we can't be with you while you remember your dad you're in our thoughts from afar. May he be with your mom now and his granddaughter and watch over all of you.

Love, Lisa, Nathan and Kouriann

Thanks, Coach, for being such a great encourager and role model. You could be tough and gentle at the same time and greatly influenced the man I've become. I'm thankful I got to visit with you again at our 50th Class of '56 Reunion.

Leslie and family. Jim and I are sorry to hear of the passing of your father. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. I know you will miss him terribly but the beautiful memories you shared with him over the years will always bring comfort to you. We did not know him but it is certain he was an extra special Father, Coach, Teacher and Friend. This guest book is a beautiful tribute to your Father because it is full of heartfelt comments that describe what a great man he was and what a wonderful legacy he left behind. Let me know if there is anything we can do to help even though we are in Charlotte.

From the time I was a little kid learning to swim at Renners, to high school when he encouraged me to give my all, Coach Tyree was always someone I resected. The world has lost a great man, but he will live on in the many lives he touched and the many people he inspired. Much love to the whole family.

To the family of Jim Tyree:
It's hard to believe that almost one year to date Coach Tyree was attending my 60th surprise Birthday and what a surprise it was to see a man I respected so much and who had done so much for the surrounding communities to humble me at my 60th birthday. He will be a person that will be remembered always and not forgotten in our prayers.

Some men become rich and a few men become famous. Almost no one becomes great. "Coach" looms in our lives as a great man because of his selflessness. He was constantly finding a place to serve, and then, gave himself with such integrity and without the need for personal acclaim. He truly reflected the One who lived in him, God's Son, Jesus, who gave His life for us.

Dear Coach Tyree Family,
What can not be said about Coach Tyree, an icon in the Stow High teaching system! "Old School"! What a great teacher, person, Stow representative and just a great guy that I am please to say was my physical ed. teacher. Greatest wrestling coach in the area not just at Stow. Just a GREAT MAN! My deepest sympathy goes out to the Tyree family, not only have you lost a father and grandfather the world lost a genuine guy but God has recieved an Angel. God Bless.

I had the honor of having Coach in school as well as working with him at Munroe Falls park for 7 years. He was bigger than life. You always felt like you were in the presence of somebody special when you were around him. He reinforced every positive character trait I received from my own parents and I never saw him once stray from those values. It was a blessing to have spent as much time with him as I did. God bless you Jay, Janeann and Leslie.

Our sympathies go out to the Tyre family. This world has lost a great servant of God. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 "But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope." We who believe, as Coach believed, have hope and will see him again in Eternity. Rest now Coach for your work here is finished. Thanks for being a man of God!

Dear Tyree family. We are deeply sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Coach was one unbelievable man. He touched countless lives. He steered so many down the right path. He added personality to our high school. He made doing the right thing "cool." He made men and women out of boys and girls. He is a huge part of the legacy of Stow schools, as a teacher, a coach, a mentor and a role model. The Good Lord has blessed our lives with Coach's impact on us. I am sure Coach has heard, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." His legacy will be ongoing. May the Good Lord's peace be upon the family and friends of Coach during this difficult time.

Jay, Janeanne and Leslie, I'm so sorry to hear the news about your Dad. He will always live on in our memories. He touched so many peoples lives. I remember trying to pull him out of the water at Munroe Falls Park as he played the victim during lifeguard training. His forearms were bigger than my thighs at the time. He could run around the lake doing a handstand. He taught us so much over the short time we were there. Sailing, scuba diving, kayaking, not because it was in the job description, but because he cared. My wife doesn't understand my love for "Coach" when ever we ran into him over the years it was like meeting the pope. My deepest sympathy in your time of sorrow.

Jim was a great guy. He was a Keel-Hauler Canoe Club member for 29 years and always helped out the club by inviting them to an outing at Silver Lake each year. He gave a hand to everyone that needed help, he donated canoes and kayaks to Silver Lake and taught their members how to paddle. We will keep him in our prayers and memories.

Rest In Peace Coach James G. Tyree
by FP

How can it be, not James Tyree

He could lift a building with a single bound

Probably even out run a bullet with not even a sound

High moral standards were what he taught

The bar was set high, for what we got

He had a tender heart and cared about us

In his charge, he took is seriously .....at times with a fuss

Character and fair play were at the top of his list

He did not tolerate those with a closed fist

I'll miss him greatly, an example solid as a rock wall

His memory will go on forever in the hearts of us all

Frank Papatonis
Stow HS Heavyweight wrestler 1977

May your Memorial be Eternal!

It's impossible to sum up how the lives of so many students, neighbors and friends have been touched by the wisdom, guidance and friendship of Coach. He taught integrity, self worth, good sportsmanship, a strong sense of community and a score of other lessons you can't get out of a book. I hope that some comfort can be found in knowing that the lives of many people have been made better just by knowing him.
