Harry Carmany Obituary

Harry J. Carmany

Harry J. Carmany, 92, passed away peacefully on Nov. 25, 2014.

He was the son of the late Elizabeth and Harry Hart-shorne Carmany and was raised by Mayme and Howard Miller. A lifelong resident of Manchester (New Franklin), he attended Manchester Schools and Coventry High School, graduating in 1940 and where he was active in band, orchestra and basketball. Mr. Carmany married Helene Louise Steigner on Sept. 18, 1948, after proposing on Valentine's Day. The 66 year marriage endured until his death.

Babcock & Wilcox employed Mr. Carmany for 44 years in the Power Generation Group. He was the second recipient of the very prestigious Engineering Honors Award. As a member of the Masonic Order for 70 years, he was a 32nd Degree Mason, Past Master of Elliott Lodge #514, Canal Fulton, a member of the Blue Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Shrine Band. Always community-minded, Mr. Carmany served on the Manchester Local School Board for more than 20 years as both President and Vice President, the Portage Lakes Joint Vocational School Board as President and Vice President and the Consistory of Manchester Trinity Chapel (now Grace Bible Church), where he was a life-long member. During his time on the Franklin Twp., Volunteer Fire Dept., he helped to "build" their first fire engine. As a member of the Manchester Music Club, he transported band instruments to games for more than ten years. He also volunteered with the Cub and Boy Scouts.

The Carmany's love of camping and travel led them to be founding members of the Wandering Ohio Winnies (WOW) and the Buckeye Winnies, whose members joined them on many trips, even to Alaska. Winters were enjoyed at the Saddlebag Lake community in Lake Wales, Florida where he was active in the Men's CLub, the Church Choir, the Kitchen Band, the Masonic group and numerous other activities.

Mourning his passing are his wife, Helene; and his children, Barbara (William R.) Sanderson, Keith (fiancee' Colleen Ferguson) Carmany, Thurl (Karen) Carmany and Roger Carmany. Also missing him are his grandchildren, Alan (Claudia) Horst, David Horst, Karl (Lindsay) Sanderson and Dr. Bradley Sanderson, all of the Akron area, Bruce Carmany and Johanna Carmany of New York; four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings, John (Marge) Carmany, Robert (Sue) Carmany and William Carmany; and is survived by brother, Bruce (Janet) Carmany; sister, Jane (Wayne) Hudkins; sister-in-law, Loretta Carmany; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family appreciated the care he received from our home healthcare aides, Dr. Lenz and Barberton Family Practice, Summa-Barberton Hospital, as well as the staffs of Doylestown Healthcare and Crossroads Hospice.

Memorial services and burial at Manchester Cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in his honor and memory to The Harry J. Carmany Fund at Manchester Local Schools, 6075 Manchester Rd., Akron, OH 44319 or In memory of Harry J. Carmany (A.A.S.R., Valley of Canton) Children's Dyslexia Center, 836 Market Ave. North, Canton, OH 44702 Swigart-Easterling, 330-854-2356
