Janet Dunham Obituary

Janet G. (Sciencelady) Dunham, age 72, passed away April 5, 2010 following a short illness.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio on February 24, 1938, she was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Ruth (Furry) Shaw. Janet had been a resident of Jackson Township since 1944. A graduate of Jackson High School class of 1956 and Massillon Community Hospitals School of Nursing class of 1959, she worked at Massillon Community Hospital (MCH) for two years after graduation. Janet and V. Edward (Ed) Dunham met in church and later married in 1961. When he was drafted four months later she went with him to Aberdeen, Maryland where she worked in the OB department of the Army hospital for two years. After the military obligation was completed, they moved to Columbus where she worked at OSU Hospital as head nurse in the Emergency Department while Ed completed his BS and MS in education.

In 1969, her son Mark arrived and she became a stay at home mom for the next eight years. In 1971, she and the family moved back to Jackson to the home they built and her daughter Jennifer arrived in 1972. While a stay-at-home, mom she enjoyed sewing, raising and canning her own meat, vegetables and fruits on their little farm, entertaining local pre-schools and kindergarteners field trips to the ``farm', traveling, and camping with the family. After both children were in school, Janet went back to work at the MCH Emergency Department (ED) part time, then full time two years later when Ed entered medical school. She later left the ED to become the Patient Advocate for MCH and later assumed the additional responsibilities of Risk Manager and Compliance Officer. At 65 she retired and continued to volunteer and teach a science/nature enrichment program at Jackson Amherst Elementary. Janet loved teaching her science/nature enrichment program which she developed in 2003 when her grandson, Ryan, began kindergarten. She expanded the program to the first and second grades as he advanced. Janet had continued the program for the last seven years developing the ``Science To Go Program' which was adopted district wide. On most school days she could be found at Amherst teaching her beloved students. Janet was actively involved with Boy Scouts; as an assistant Cub Scout den leader and committee member for four years, assisting with Cub Scout Day Camp four years - presenting a Nature program for two years, as an assistant instructor in the Baden Powell Scout Leader training program, serving on Troop 921 troop committee and as a merit badge counselor. She was scheduled to be a merit badge counselor at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree prior to her illness and was in the process of becoming a Big Sister in the Stark Co. program.

Janet had a tremendous sense of humor, was very creative and outgoing. She was in awe of God's creation and enjoyed her family, serving others, gardening, photography, travel, and animals - a friendly golden retriever, Buckeye chickens, a bunny, fish, and a parakeet. Janet was a long time Christian attending Rivertree Christian Church with her husband Ed and lived a life that reflected her faith and values.

Janet is survived by her husband of 48 years, V. Edward Dunham, M.D.; son, Mark E. Dunham and his wife Dawn; daughter, Jennifer R. Durr and husband Carl; grandson, Ryan A. Dunham; granddaughter, Daphne Dunham; and stepgrandchildren, Eric, Christopher, Chastity, and Brandy Durr and her son Isaiah.

Calling hours are Friday, April 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Rivertree Christian Church, 7373 Portage NW, Massillon, OH 44646. Funeral service will be at the church Saturday, April 10 at 10 a.m., with viewing pne hour prior. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Akron, with a celebration of her life to follow at the church at about 12 noon.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, a charitable donation may be made in Janet's name to the Western Stark Free Clinic, 820 Amherst NW, Massillon, OH 44646, or the Akron General Development Foundation for the McDowell Cancer Center, c/o Akron General Hospital, 400 Wabash Ave., Akron, OH 44307. Dunham Family: I am a former Jackson classmate of Janet and have fond memories of being in a club of 4 girls in 8th grade..we were Fishie, Fensie, Jake and JoJo. I was Fensie and Janet was Jake. We took on the colors of the earth...green and brown and envisioned grand camp outs...although we didn't accomplish that goal, I was invited to spend a momentus night at Janet's house...while running around outside the house,in the dark, I ran into something and broke my nose..of course, Janet and her parents never knew the extent of my injury since you didn't complain about a little pain.

I will remember Janet as being a fun and talented girl who turned into a wonderful, gifted woman. I am thankful for such good memories about a very special person.

Janet was a classmate of mine at Massillon City Hospital School of Nursing Class of '59. She helped organize our 50th class reunion last June at which we all had a wonderful time sharing memories and rekindling old friendships. We all loved her enthusiam and mishievious nature, as well as her serious side. My condolences to her husband and family in the loss of this great beloved lady.

Dear Dunham Family,
I am sorry about Mrs. Dunham. She was a great science teacher and everybody loved her. She was a great person too. My favorite memory of her is when we went out together for dinner at Beuhlers. I showed her my science experiement and she explained how it worked. She gave me some science books and a cool fossil. She was a kind and caring person. We had so much fun together. Everybody at school loved to do science with her, especially me. We pray for her every night. Love, Gracie Taylor (3rd grade @ Amherst Elementary)
