I was a student at the University of Toledo 1964-1968 and was very fortunate to have Prof. Leathers as a Professor. His upbeat atttude in the classroom and his clarity of thought was notable and he made a lasting impression on me. I was just rummaging through some old files and stumbled on a letter I received from him when he was Dean and decided to try to find him on line and see I was too late to thank him for the great educational experience he gave me. He was far too modest and I wish he would have told us more about his remarkable and inspiring life. He only displayed the tip of the iceberg in the classroom and that was enough to show his students that he was a remarkable man.

Dear Leathers Family:

I direct the US Navy Japanese/Oriental Language School Archival Project at the Archives, University of Colorado Boulder Libraries. Please accept my deepest condolences. Professor Leathers was a great example of the distinguished, interesting, humorous, and outstanding members of that group of WWII Navy and Marine interpreters who were sent to the Navy Japanese Language School at the University of Colorado and served in the Pacific War. It has been my honor and pleasure to have met or corresponded with more than 500 of these veterans. The hardest part of this job is saying goodbye to them. Professor Leathers shared some of his experiences with our project. We will miss him. Please let us know if we can be of assistance to your family.

We didn't realize that morning,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
but you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And though we cannot see you,
You are always by our side.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again. I love you dad always.
