"Dick" Sodergren
Richard C. "Dick" Sodergren, age 95, passed away on June 8, 2018.
Born in Wayland, Iowa on March 7, 1923, he lived most of his life in Cuyahoga Falls prior to moving to North Canton.
Dick graduated from Wayland High School where he was an All-American basketball player. He went on to the University of Iowa, receiving his bachelor's degree in Accounting and was able to play some college basketball before joining the Army Air Corps. He was a navigator on a B-25 where he was stationed at Le Shima, and was a witness to the Japanese surrender.
Dick retired in 1985 from Goodyear Tire and Rubber, and was formerly involved with the Masonic Lodge in Iowa. He liked watching baseball and basketball, enjoyed golfing and also played the clarinet.
Preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Vera "Vickie" (Jensen) Sodergren; brother, Robert; second wife, Cheryl; and parents, Clair and Eva, he is survived by children, Paul (Debbie), Carol (Jim) Martell, and Judy Hill; grandchildren, Ryan, Kyle, Kyra, Kristen, Allison, Karla and Robert; and great-grandchildren, Isabella, Clayton, Sophia, Elizabeth, Kate, Charlotte, Ami, Rylie, Logan and Karson.
Funeral service will be Thursday, 2 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale Street NW, UNIONTOWN, Ohio 44685 (one block NW of the square of 619 & Cleveland Ave.) with Pastor Jeff Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Cuyahoga Falls. Friends and family will be received at the funeral home prior to the service on Thursday, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace United Church of Christ, or Disabled American Veterans. Dick was such a dear soul. Tim and I feel extremely fortunate to have had him as a neighbor and friend. We loved spending time with him talking about the wonderful life he was so fortunate to have lived.
