Sam Hilling
Sam Hilling passed away Sunday, August 3, 2014 at his residence of COPD due to an accident in his pole barn on November 3, 2010, where he cracked three ribs causing the COPD.
He was born July 14, 1941 in Jeanette, Pa. to the late Sam and Peg (Loughton) Hilling and graduated from Hempfield High School in 1960. Following graduation Sam joined the United States Air Force serving for four years and married Barbara whom he had four children with Cheryl Legg, Linda Sutton, Pam Bovino and Peggy Grafton. He later married Patricia Gardner who passed away on October 20, 2008. Sam was an avid hunter and fisherman, where he fished for 40 years from Toledo to Lake Erie with weather permitting with the notorious 27 ft. Sam and Patty. He was very much involved in the political arena of helping Dems get elected, his favorite was when Dan Quayle came to Portage County, when Sam was president of Democratic United Coalition of Organized Labor and welcomed him at the Portage County Courthouse. He also was a 30 year veteran of the Portage Summit, Stark and Wayne county UAW CAP which he enjoyed very much of the political scene. He was a member of the Streetsboro United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Streetsboro VFW. Sam retired from Terex after 20 years of services where he worked as an assembler. In addition to his four daughters; Sam also leaves behind his step son, Dennis (Mary ) Gardner; seven grandchildren, Bruce, Brandi, Ronnie, Ryan, Josh, Nancy, Sammy; three great grandchildren Kiarra, Carson, Baylee; and sister, Martha Bockman. Preceding him in death besides his parents; and wife, Patricia; are his brother, Tom Hilling.
Calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at the Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Homes Streetsboro Chapel where funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. Condolences and memories may be shared with Sam's family at www.sscfuneralhomes.com.
