Sidney Corbin Obituary

Sidney E. Corbin, DO, FACOA

Sidney E. Corbin, DO, FACOA, longtime resident of Cuyahoga Falls, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2016 surrounded by family in Vancouver, Wash. after a three month illness.

Sidney and his wife, Freda, of 55 years, relocated to the Northwest in July, 2015 to be near their daughters.

Sidney was born in New Kensington, Pa. and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. He also attended Pharmacology school at Pitt. Soon after finishing his pharmacy training, he entered medical school at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency training in anesthesia at then Green Cross Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls. Sidney faithfully served the Cuyahoga Falls community as an anesthesiologist for his entire career. He was chairman of the department of Anesthesia at Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital for the majority of his 30-year career before retiring in 1994. During his career he directed a residency training program for many years, training the next generation of anesthesiologists, some who are still serving the local community; he was an AOA board examiner, member of the American Osteopathic Association of Anesthesiologists, and served on the Osteopathic Board of Governors at the national level. He was a beloved colleague and friend to many in his professional career.

Sidney was a member of Silver Lake Country Club and St. George Orthodox Church. He was an avid sports fan. His frustration at times from being a Browns fan was more than compensated for by The Ohio State Buckeyes. Seeing the Cavs win the NBA championship this past year was a source of great joy and satisfaction after supporting Cleveland sports for more than 50 years.

Sidney is survived by wife, Freda; son, David Corbin (Cindy) of San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Dr. Christine Corbin (John McAfee) of Portland, Ore., and daughter, Melissa Pearson (Christopher) of Vancouver, Wash.; grandchildren, Alex, Camille, Jack, and Gabriel; many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents, Kareem and Marie Eazer Corbin; and brothers Edward, Fred, Arthur, and Raymond Corbin.

Funeral services were held at St. Anthony Orthodox Church, San Diego, with entombment at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego. A forty day memorial divine liturgy will be held in Sidney's honor on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 11 a.m. at St. George Orthodox Church, 3204 Ridgewood Road, Akron.

I fondly remember Sid from my internship at Green Cross General Hospital 1969-1970. While I was supposed to be on the Surgery Serice with Dr. Harbarger, I instead was administering anesthesia as an intern with Sid as my mentor even during cases when Harbarger was operating. Sid was a great sport, a great guy, and a great mentor. A one of a kind hearted soul and a gentleman through and through. RIP my dear colleague
