Thomas Ries Obituary
Thomas R. Ries, 80, of Canal Fulton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014.
Tom was born Dec. 17, 1933, to Harry and Leolla (Hess) Ries in Massillon, Ohio. He graduated from Canal Fulton High School, Class of 1951, and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a life-long farmer who also worked and retired from Dominion East Ohio Gas in 1989 after 25 years of service.
He loved his family; his farm, especially raising pumpkins and sweet corn; his John Deere tractors; the Cleveland Indians; Ohio State football; and was a member of the Stark County Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marie (Ruegg); sons, Steve (Christine) and Mark; grandchildren, Haley and Matthew Ries; brother, Robert (Naomi) of Jeromesville, Ohio, Richard of Massillon; and sister, Betty (Tom) McFarlane of Wooster. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by granddaughter, Amber Marie Ries.
Funeral service will be held SATURDAY, October 11, 2014, 11 a.m. at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 E. Cherry St. (Rt. 93), Canal Fulton, Fr. Kevin McCaffrey officiating. Burial at Canal Fulton Cemetery. Calling hours FRIDAY, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to service time on Saturday. Marie & Family-
It has been a long time since I was up there and shared life's time with you & Tom. Remember visits to Ohio in the summers of the 1950's. Wow, long ago. Loved to do things with Tom, yeah, especially riding around on the John Deere. Some very fond memories. So I am sitting here in Plantation, FL, watching - yup, Ohio State football vs. Michigan State(bad word) and thought for some reason of Tom. And - here I am. Very sorry for your loss, he was a terrific man. That's what I remember.

Dear Marie & Family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I will never forget Tom's love of farming, John Deere tractors,pumpkins and sweet corn and the nights of fun playing softball until it was to dark to see and then heading to the milk house to talk and laugh and relive the game. Dad and Tom were close and they will both be missed.
