Oct. 19, 1947 - Nov. 2, 2012 EDMOND Fred Standen, Jr. passed away at home on November 2, 2012, at the age of 65. Fred was born in Watertown, NY on October 19, 1947, to Fred Sr. and Dorothy Standen. He married his wife of 41 years, Maureen (Krantz), and had a son, Matthew John Standen. Fred served in the Army National Guard from 1970-1976. He graduated from SUNY Buffalo, and went on to teach mathematics at his alma mater, East Syracuse-Minoa High School. Later, he earned a second degree from SUNY in electrical engineering. This led him to a position at Griffiss AFB in Rome, NY and work which took him to Europe, Turkey, Greece, and many locations within the US. While at Griffiss, Fred volunteered for the STEM program, educating youth, and was sent to Thule, Greenland, and Grissom AFB in Indiana. Due to base realignment and closure Fred and his family were relocated to Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City in 1994. While at Tinker, Fred made monthly trips to Beale AFB in California where he continued his work with STEM, and was responsible for the base communications blueprint used to secure funding from various sources. During his career, Fred received numerous awards including Don Balliett Civilian Engineer of the Year in 1999, and at Tinker AFB in 2005, the STEM B of the Year at Beale AFB, and in 2007 was honored with the Commander's Excellence Award. Fred retired in 2010. Fred was preceded in death by his father, Fred Sr. He is survived by his wife Maureen, his son Matthew of the home, his mother Dorothy of NC, his sister Marie Zeko of NY, brothers John and wife Shirley of CT, and Michael and wife Cindy of New York, as well as his dear friends Larry Davis and Andy Turenne, who along with Fred were known as the Three Amigos. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the doctors and caregivers at the Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma Hospital, the loving, nurturing people of The Good Shepherd Hospice, and the many friends as well as family for their support throughout this five year journey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society for Melanoma. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Edmond, OK, on Monday, November 12, 2012, at 11A.M. Internment will take place in Shallotte, NC.
