January 13, 1938-September 25, 2013 NEWALLA, OK James Walter Garrett, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away September 25, 2013. He was born to Thomas and Frances Garrett on January 13, 1938 in Santana, KS. Jim married his high school sweetheart, Sammie, on June 4, 1959. Jim and Sammie raised 3 sons on a piece of land in Newalla, OK that Jim deemed "the perfect place to raise his boys." Jim attended the University of Oklahoma, worked as a roughneck, and then began working for Oklahoma Natural Gas (ONG) as a leak checker. From this position he worked on a gang digging ditches, as a surveyor's helper, surveyor, and in the office performing load studies. He then managed the Northside Service Center, where he was told he could finish school and work at night. After receiving his degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma he moved to Tulsa and worked in the Engineering Program. Jim loved his job and the people he worked with. He retired from ONG in 1996 as Vice-President of Operations. Jim was the Chairman of the American Gas Association, a member of the Oklahoma Senior's Golf Association, and the Elk's Lodge in Shawnee, OK. He was also instrumental in developing the Call-Okie System for Oklahoma.Jim leaves an incredible legacy to his children, grandchildren, family and friends. As a caretaker, he was unsurpassed, caring for family, friends and the families of friends for years and always without complaint or want of recognition. He had an excellent work ethic, which began at age 13 when he worked as a janitor at the elementary school. This work ethic continued throughout his life. His love for and commitment to family was constant. He taught his sons to hunt, fish and work hard. More than anything, he loved the times his entire family was together. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Gerald and Frankie Followwill, sister Lillie, brother Charlie and his beloved first grandchild Chad, who we know is so happy to see his Papa! Jim leaves to continue this legacy his wife Sammie, sons Craig and wife Becky of Newalla, OK, Kent and Shawna of Lubbock, TX, and Chris and wife Dottie of Oklahoma City, OK, his beloved grandchildren Ryan and wife Kendra, Madison, Larian, Bo, Jamie, Alli, Abbi, and Emily Garrett and his great-grandchildren Jase and Hali Rose. Jim also leaves his brothers, Thomas and Doug, sisters, Georgia, Kay, and Becky, brother-in-law Rick, his wife Sharon, and their families along with a host of extended family and friends.Visitation will be Friday, September 27, 2013, at John Ireland Funeral Home, 120 S. Broadway, Moore, OK. Memorial service will be held Saturday, September 28, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Choctaw Church of the Nazarene, N.E. 10th and Harper Rd., Choctaw, OK. It's the little things that made James standout. I remember when he helped me with my algebra in 1958. He will be missed!! Tony class of 55
