Mr. Henry Samuel "Chip" Atkins Jr., age 68, of Thomson, entered into rest on Monday, July 15, 2013.
Chip was born in Augusta on August 1, 1944, the son of the late Henry Samuel Atkins Sr. and Virginia Adams Atkins. He was a 1962 graduate of Richmond Academy, where he was a member of the golf and academic teams, and he graduated from the Junior College of Augusta in 1964, where he was also a member of the golf team.
In the fall of 1964, Athens came calling. Chip graduated from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity, in 1966. He remained in Athens and graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1969, being named "Top Tier."
Chip began his legal career in Augusta, but grew fond of the rural atmosphere and "country living." He moved to Greensboro, where he shared a successful law practice with Miles Walker Lewis. After moving to Watkinsville, he decided to give politics a try and was elected Chairman of the 10th District of the Republican Party, and was selected as a delegate for the Republican National Convention in 1988. Ultimately, Chip ended up in Thomson some 20 years ago, but his heart and the majority of his practice remained in Greensboro.
Outside of his law practice, Chip's main hobbies were following the Georgia Bulldogs and the Masters Tournament. He was also an avid race fan and loved going to NASCAR races with his father and brother back in the 1950s and 1960s. His three heroes have always been Abraham Lincoln, Bobby Jones, and A.J. Foyt.
Chip had the pleasure to serve as a past president of his district's chapter of the Lions Club. He received the annual Indigent Award from the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 1988, and was made a life member. He loved practicing law and was always available to help a client reach resolution. He had great respect for the legal system, the judiciary, and fellow attorneys.
Chip will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all, but never forgotten. He lived life on his terms.
In addition to his parents, Chip was predeceased by his sons, Henry Samuel "Sam" Atkins III, in 1988, and Paul Micah Atkins, in 1995; and by his close nephew, Charles R. "Charlie" Atkins Jr., in 2012.
Chip is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Marsha Phillips Atkins; son, Ravenel M. (Ashley) Atkins, of Martinez; daughters, Hannah R. Atkins, of Augusta, and Melanie Atkins Taylor, of Evans; grandchildren, Samuel B. Wilson, Lawson B. Taylor, Emily M. Atkins, and Colton L. Atkins; brother, Charles R. (Joan) Atkins; and sister, Beth Atkins (Birnie) Florie.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, in the chapel of Beggs Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Wilson officiating. In Chip's honor, please dress in Georgia Bulldog or Masters attire for the celebration.
In lieu of flowers, if so desired, the family requests that you consider a kind donation to the Chip Atkins Memorial Fund, c/o First Citizen's Bank, 235 Main St., Thomson, GA 30824.
Beggs Funeral Home, Thomson, is in charge of the arrangements.
