He was the best professor I have ever had: I was in his Biochemistry 801 & 802 classes at Univ. of Georgia

My first professor when I entered UGA graduate school in Microbiology was Dr. Dure. He was bigger than life. He was tough, he was smart, he was serious; but, most of all, he was inspirational. He was what a true professional should be. I treasure every minute that I spent in his classroom.

I just learned of Col. Dure's passing from a friend, CWO Harold Hooks. Col. Dure was my CO in the Augusta Marines as we proudly called ourselves. I can still see his swagger and firey demeanor. I had a lot of respect for him and fondly remember those times many years ago. Mgysgt. Tommy McGlohon

I want to thank everyone for sharing your memories, and it's wonderful to see some names I haven't seen in years. Dad may have been a curmudgeon second, but he was a gentleman first, and the kind thoughts expressed here reflect that.

Though he had no memorial service, which really wasn't in his nature, I wrote a eulogy of sorts online. Search "Leon Sebring Dure III 1931," and it should be one of the first things to pop up. Feel free to read while listening to bagpipes or arguing about the designated hitter.

I met Leon Dure as a first year grad student in Biochemistry. I was so impressed with his intellect, I badgered him until he took me on as a Grad student. From hiking up and down Mt. LeCont to drinking "neat" whiskey into the morning hours as we wailed on "blues harps", I enjoyed our time together and treasure it until today.
I left UGa...and lost touch with Leon and Ann and their young son; but think fondly of them in quiet moments imbued with self reflection. Our paths crossed so many ways, from Charlottesville, to his brother "Kenny" to St. Anthony Hall. I will think of him often.

i will always hold close to my heart the happy hours talking with Leon on Springdale St about Virginia, Thomas Jefferson, Kentucky coffee bean trees and countless other things "southern."

His passing is the end of an era at so many levels.
