Wow! Virgil (Pop) we celebrated you tonight and I now truly know the magnitude of the people you have made a positive impact upon. We will miss you in everything we do, but will smile when we remember you in everything we do. We can only aspire to make as much of a legacy as you have. Rest in good peace Virgil / Pop / Friend.

Shirley my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. What a loss to so many people. It was a honor to know him and to be one of his nurses all those years. He always brightened my day and put a smile on my face. He will be truly missed.

Virgil hired me as a writer for the UGA Extension Service in 1974 and I worked at the desk next to his until he retired. He made me a better writer and a better person, encouraged me to get two graduate degrees and be creative. Weekly and daily newspaper editors across the state knew that--first and foremost--Virgil valued good journalism: whether it was a garden column or an article for a scientific magazine. He could be demanding, cantankerous, loving, funny and serious; all in the same moment. It usually involved some story he would tell that was one part West Tennessee, two parts humor, and seven parts parable. To know Virgil was to carry one or two of those Virgilism with you for the rest of your life. To all his extended family, may good memories be long and frequent and grief short and fading.

From the first time I read a column by Virgil in the REA magazine,I was hooked...every month I read his column first!!I saved copies of this little magazine for an Aunt in Chattanooga until she could no longer read them because of failing eyesight!
Have kept up with Virgil and you,Shirley through cousins who were close friends of the both of you!!
We send our deepest sympathy and our love and prayers,

I knew of Virgil much of my life due to having been a classmate with his son Neal. I met and got to know Virgil and Mary in the mid 80s at Bethany Church. They were among the best people I have ever met. The same can be said of Shirley Gentry who I met later.
Virgil and Hulon Hill helped me through the hardest part of my life after I lost my oldest son.
My fondest of all Virgil's many sayings was this " God loves you anyhow"
Family take solace in knowing he was a good man and touched many lives.
Rest in peace Virgil you are missed.

My heart goes out to you for the deep loss you must be feeling for your beloved. How sad to lose someone so loved and so needed. May you find comfort in prayer and in one another (Jeremiah 29:12, 13)
