A final comment just two hours after hearing this sad news. Dan sent me good news about the operative findings just after his surgery but also the unusual comment how tired he felt. I imagine his last thoughts in septicemic shock were to cheer me up as his friend. I know only a few of you that were fortunate enough to know him well, but I'm sure his spirit is left to give us this advice as he did in life , " Live each day as if it were your last ". Dan, You were always my go-to friend whenever I really needed some reasoned , helpful counsel, and I never even thanked you for that. I'll forever , miss you and your unique perspective - your joy for life and constant bright side viewpoint. I'm only cheered to know you passed easily as I spoke with you just days before. Thanks to those in closer contact and physical comradeship these last few years. He so appreciated you all.

I met Dan in 1969 as a kid, we hiked the Rogue River together in Boy Scouts. I was 10, Dan was 17. To me Dan was a grown up stud. I remember Dan showing me his modified backpack and how it worked for him. To a 10 year old he was a superman. The next season our Scout Troop (Troop 69 --- I'm NOT joking) had to go to Siltcoos Lake and clean up a little fire a couple of kids started the year before. Dan ran the chain saw while us young kids did the lower level clean up work. Good times.
