McCauley, Estues 'E.Z.' 92 Sept. 02, 1921 April 16, 2014 E.Z. was born Sept. 2, 1921, to James McCauley, an Irish immigrant, and Alma Mendenhall, a Quaker, in Parma, Idaho. He left us April 16, 2014, at age 92, with his loving family surrounding him. He grew up in Portland and attended Boise Elementary School and Benson High School. He served his country in the Army during WWII in the Philippines, Guadalcanal and other areas of the Pacific. He later served in the Marine Corps Reserve and finally in the Air Force Reserves from which he retired as Chief Master Sergeant. He served the City of Portland as a Firefighter for 31 years, of which he was very proud and considered a great life. His greatest accomplishment was his family: wife, Norinne (deceased); daughters, Dawn McCauley, Robin Tijerina, Eve Gray, Heather Ruecker and Meagan McCauley; sons-in-law; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, in Willamette National Cemetery. Memorial gathering following at 3:30 p.m. at Kell's, 112 S.W. Second Ave., Portland. In the short time I had with E.Z.McCauley he gave me his bits of wisdom about so many things, his witty sense of humor, his kindness and his love. His memories will always make me smile. My love to Eve, Dawn, Robin, Meagan, Heather and all their families.

You are so excited when you buy a house, in a great neighborhood with treed streets and sidewalks. And, in all that excitement, you haven't given a second thought about the neighbors. So, it was of some concern when we met the neighbors to our south. The diminutive couple would talk to us through their sun porch window that bordered our driveway. Casual chitchat at first. Little did we know that the conversations through that window would become such an endearing part of our long and special relationship.
We would watch, amused by the daughters, and it took us awhile to figure out who and how many. They would mow the lawn wearing bikinis and golf shoes. Later, we would hear even younger children running through and around the house—the next generation. Evidence that EZ and Norinne always offered a haven to their daughters and their children.
Over time, any concerns, minor though they were, about living next to the MacCauleys, were totally displaced by kindness, generosity and caring. EZ became a surrogate dad to me and it was certainly a wonderment that he would want even more estrogen to care for.
EZ looked after us. The day that I was deep in the hole we dug to get to the water main, he came running over to inspect the walls for potential cave in. That's the closest we came to being scolded by EZ. He shared halibut steaks from his fishing trips; showed us nuggets from his claim; extended the life of our Christmas Tree with some sort of solution—it worked; loaned me tools and he imparted a wealth of, oftentimes sound advice and tips. He always knew when we had cut our tree—he could hear the bickering from the driveway as we argued about untying the damn thing and rolling it off the roof. He'd come around the foliage that fronted his sun porch, grinning, ready to help. He shared his 5 daughters and their families—the girls have the good and wonderful nature of their parents.
So, I've been privileged and blessed to be the “adopted” 6th daughter, of a man who may have been slight in stature, but giant in generosity and caring. Every time I get a whiff of Daphne, I think of Norinne who said, “Dig it up and plant it in your yard, Luci”. And, every time I see the sun porch window, I remember and will think of EZ for the rest of my days here.

Dad, I am so grateful that you were my Dad. You had five daughters but loved each of us equally and with all your heart. You leave such an amazing and interesting legacy. You were never a complainer and had an amazing appreciation for life. You taught us to be honest, reliable, and caring people. We will truly miss you.

To the family. Your father was a good father. I remember the gold mining trips, he was always to excited about us finding gold. The weekend sleep overs when regardless if you were his daughters or not if you were there you helped with the weekend chores. He was a good man that will abviously be missed by so many, but not more than the daughters he adored. So sorry for your loss.

To all the McCauley ladies... Your Father and Mother were such wonderful people. So many have great memories after spending any time with them and you ladies. As a child I have great childhood memories at your home with the many summer nights and hot sunny swim days. Hey who wants to jump in the pool for dimes? I learned so many life lessons from your Mother and Father. I will be forever grateful to you for sharing them with me. All my love Jennifer Siri Rasch

My close friend E.Z. McCauley's passing is hard to accept. We served together in the Air Force Reserve between 1963 and 1981 in the 939th Military Airlift Group and in support of the City of Portland's disaster preparedness emergency management program. He often consulted with me about the mining claims he located on federal land in eastern Oregon. As one of the most positive, caring, and reliable individuals I have ever known, E.Z. will be greatly missed.
