Mr. Casper was my high school English teacher in senior year. I still have one of the books he assigned us -- "Darkness at Noon" by Arthur Koestler. It was about a man married to his politics, in this case Communism. It was based on Koestler's own experiences and the time he spent in a death camp during Stalin's purges. Heavy reading for a high school senior class in the spring, eagerly awaiting graduation.

How little has changed, though. People still get married to their politics, for better or worse.

Great book. Thanks for assigning it, Mr. Casper, and assuming that we could handle it.

Buz and I started teaching in the Medford School District in 1966 and both worked at Medford Senior high School. I loved Buz. Buz and I were friends for a long time and the fact that he stayed in the Medford School District all these years is testimony to his tenaciousness. He was a good teacher and a beloved friend and I feel sad today to read of his death. His students were lucky to have him as their teacher and I was lucky to have him as a friend.
