I was shocked to see that Jim was gone. He was always my go to guy for urology questions. I have always considered him a mentor since I came back to Portland in 1985 and was introduced to him by my cousin Bob. Changes in my practice the last few years caused me to drift away from Portland Providence and I did not have occasion to refer patients to Jim. I was just checking to see if he was still in practice when I saw his obituary. I will always remember his wisdom and especially his smile. my condolences to his family whom I know miss him

I remember Jim and his family. They were great and loving people. How sad!

Jim was a great friend of mine in grade school and high School in Oak Park and River, IL. We played football together and we celebrated his winning of the scholarship cup for best student in a class of 600. 4 year average of 96.5 % of a 100%.. I was also in his first wedding to Sandy. We lost contact thru the years but he has always been in my thoughts and many others in the Oak Park & River Forest Area.

The world has lost a brilliant man and a great surgeon. Their are three people that played a major in my career and Dr. Pappas was one of those three. Thank you Dr. Pappas, you left us too soon!
My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Cherish your memories.

Dear family,

I can't express my deep sorrow at Jim's passing. He was a great doctor, friend and man. I will never forget how he gave his permission to let my college/premed daughter come into surgery and gave her a mini lesson on what he was doing(no one else would). She is a physician today. I loved Jim, loved his humor and his integrity. I think of him always and will remember him with the fondest memories. He always talked about Jo and the kids. I feel like I know you all.

I pray for you all and send love to you.

We were saddened to read of Jim's passing. He was a friend and great physician. We are so grateful for his treating Ken's bladder cancer for over twenty years and we credit him for saving Ken's life.
Jim's last surgery patient of the day before he retired was Ken. He had a good sense of humor and had a wonderful caring attitude which not everybody was aware of.
In fact he came to Tillamook for over twenty years and sometimes he even transported patients to Portland because they had no other means of transportation to get to the "big city."
He loved good books and enjoyed discussing his loved grandchildren with us.
Sincerely,
Ken and Dorothy Hooley, Bay City, OR

Let me add another dimension to Jim's illustrious background. Jim was an All-State end at Oak Park (IL) HS. At Yale, he was a brilliant student and outstanding football player. We were brothers in Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and football teammates. Jim was outstanding at end on Yale's undefeated 1960 team.

I had the good fortune of linking up with Jim again in Portland. He performed surgery on my son and father-in-law.

My life is richer for having known you, Jim.

Jo, Holly, Mark & Elise.

Words cannot describe my feelings. There is this empty feeling & I moved from Portland to Lodi in 1988 so there was this bond, a loving bond & a caring bond Jim provided to my family.

Jo, thank you for letting me know that Jim became ill once again & this gave me time to write him a note. He got me the job at Urology Associates & I worked for the finest doctors for 16 years. Jim & Dr. Kalez saved my husbands life in 2002 and for that I will be forever grateful.

Holly, Mark & Elise, I watched you grow up to become wonderful beings that I'm sure your dad was very proud of. I mean the man was Greek, he's proud of his kids, as he should be.

Jo, we've been friends for many years, so many that I'm not going to post it online. You have been with me through up & downs, through fun times & sad times, through sickness & health, having many birthday lunches & the wonderful meal you prepared for us when Terry was going to have surgery. There are many people who you can call acquaintances but there are only a handful you can call friends & that's what you have been to me, a true friend.

Please know that Terry & I are sending your prayers & strength.

Love,
Terry & Judy
