Jane Driggers Proctor
March 24, 1956 - April 17, 2017
Wife, Mother, Jockey, Friend.
Born to Charles R. and May Hanada Driggers in Portland, March 24, 1956. Jane was one the first women jockeys in America. Starting in 1972 as a 16 year old at Portland Meadows, Jane rode at racetracks up and down the West Coast. Her career included races won on horses from Seattle to Santa Anita. Jane retired in 1983, and in 1984 married horse trainer Harry A. "Hap" Proctor and started a family. They raised two boys, John and Ben, first in California and then in Florida as Hap became the farm manager for Glen Hill Farm in 1990.
Never one to sit still, Jane found two passions after raising their two sons, tennis and puppy raising. Through tennis she formed a cadre of life long friends who stood with her and supported her everyday throughout her illness and death. Encouraged by Hap, she became involved with Guide Dogs Foundation for the Blind. Beginning with "Ritz" she nurtured several dogs, beginning at 12 weeks until about 16 months when they where returned to New York for final training and pairing with their new owner.
Jane grew up and learned to ride in Canby. She graduated from Canby High in 1974. Jane is survived by her husband, Hap; sons, John and Ben; and brothers, Joe and Jed Driggers. A Celebration of Life will be held at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 26, 2017, at Glen Hill Farm, Ocala, Florida. Remembrances to Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, 371 East Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown, NY 11787-2976.

I met Janie in 1969, we rode gaming horses in Oregon. She was the sweetest girl ever, so very sorry for your loss. But I am so glad that she started riding horses with Obrist's and got into racing, it was what she was born to do. Sending love and prayers!

A beautiful life that made a difference in our imperfect world . If I close my eyes and shuffle through my memories of Jane, Her ingenuous smile is the first thing that I see.
In high school I was given the privilege of interviewing her.Sitting there, arm in a cast(Slight inconvenience) same smile, she would be Cheerleading at the game that night. So humble, "why is this all such a big deal"?
By the end of that interview, I was well aware of the change she was making and would continue to make. This would become part of her legacy She didn't change it by force, she changed it by doing what she wanted to do and could see no reason she couldn't.
Walk softly Jane heal yourself. We will wait to hear you Thunder!

A pioneer for other female jocks who, after having busted her way thru to the top of the horseracing industry, has now busted her way thru the big pearly gates of Heaven in order to begin the next chapter of what will surely be, another amazing journey...Godspeed Jane Driggers Proctor
