Jack came into my life in 1944 when I reported to the wartime NROTC Unit at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. We formed up together, attended classes together, played basketball together and became fraternity brothers in Phi Delta Theta. Wwe went to the New Jersey shore together one week-end. After graduation and being commissioned, we had similar duty in Newport, Rhode Island and aboard the USS Denver and shared an afternoon of shore leave in Kingston, Bermuda. We went our separate ways until he received national attention for disciplining the fraternities at Lake Forest Colle where he was acting president. Portland, Oregon, my hometown, is where he made his greatest contribution. To Ruthie, I send my deepest condolences.
