Dear Mary,
I was so stunned when I heard the news, and still just can't wrap my head around such an unbelievably vibrant presence being no physically among us. I'm sad for all of U of P's loss of her amazing leadership in internationalization, but even more for your own. I fondly remember my visit to your home and looked forward to further collaborations. I will continue to hold you in the Light (as we Quakers say) in this time of loss.

Kate came to speak to my Spanish class while I was teaching at Reed College, showing a film she made on underground Jewish culture after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain. The class was very grateful for her dynamism and creativity. I was shocked to learn of her sudden death by reading over the GEMELA conference program, which featured a memorial for her. Searching for the cause of death, I found this site, and after reading the reference to her "unusually large heart" I thought of this as emblematic of her giving nature as a teacher and colleague. Indeed, she left us too soon.

I'm just stunned to hear of Kate's sudden passing. I vividly remember her commanding walk through the halls of IWHS. She walked with purpose. She was a class ahead of me but I still remember her beaming smile and her bright red hair. She always took the time to say hello to you in the hallway and she knew everyone's name. It's nice to know that she had such a fulfilling life and passed her light forward. My prayers for her family and friends who are missing her now. - Teresa McCormick Hayden IWHS Class of 1978

I was fortunate to have Professor Kate Regan for a semester and to witness her passion for life and culture that has surpassed everyone else's I have ever come across. Thank you, Kate, for reminding me of the light in life when I was still finding myself.
