Gentry, Leroy Raymond 74 March 31, 1938 March 03, 2013 Leroy Raymond Gentry of Damascus died on March 3, 2013. He was 74. He was born in St. Joseph, Mo., only minutes after his twin brother, Leo. He was son of Pearl Ester Wood (Armstrong) and Raymond Edward Gentry. In December of 1941 the family relocated to Portland. He accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior when he was 8 years old. He graduated from David Douglas High School in 1957. He met the love of his life, Sandra Sue Gentry (Cox), (whom he later married) on Dec. 31, 1958 while at a New Years Eve dance being held at Tiny Dumont's dance hall. They danced the night away and it was that night that he first kissed Sandra. It was a love that would last them the rest of their lives. They were married on July 16, 1959 in Kelso, Wash. They were both baptized at Tremont Evangelical Church on May 28, 1967 and remained members until their passing. They enjoyed their lives together for almost 48 years until Sandra passed on April 24, 2007. Leroy was known as a hard worker, often holding 3 jobs at a time to support his wife and 3 children. He continued working until October of 2012 when he retired from his last job at Leo Gentry Nursery. He loved sports and coached his son's baseball teams for many years along side the boy's uncle, Gene Bonamigo. He was a proud father and loved to brag about anything good his children or grandchildren had done. And, oh did Leroy have the gift of gab! He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere and find something in common to talk about. Leroy loved the outdoors. working his large vegetable garden, hunting and camping with family and friends, fishing in Alaska or just enjoying life at the Oregon coast, while spending time at his beach house in Rockaway. His booming laugh, big smile and tender heart will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by Larry Gentry (son) and Melanie Gentry of Scottsdale, Greg Gentry (son) and Debbie Gentry of Bend; Julie Erlich (Gentry) (daughter) and Jay Erlich of Battleground; Leo Gentry (brother) and Barbara Gentry of Damascus; Joyce Bonamigo (Gentry) (sister) and Gene Bonamigo of Portland. Leroy had eight grandchildren who he always enjoyed spending time with, Scott Gentry II, Garrett Gentry, Nick Gentry, Joseph Gonzales, Derrick Gonzales, Tyler Gentry, Caitlynne Gentry and Christian Gentry. A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Tremont Evangelical Church located at 7115 S.E. Woodstock Blvd. Interment will follow at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.

We were longtime friends of the Gentry boys. Neighbors from down the street. Leroy was a great part of our lives as youngsters and we always thought a lot of him as a friend!

I am proud to have known Leroy and Sandra, and I salute them for the parents they have been. Our boys played in the same Little League for five years and Leroy actively participated in coaching, refereeing, and any other position necessary to keep standards of fairness, sportsmanship, and clean living as goals for the youth of our community. Our world needs more MEN like him.
