Chastain, Nina Marie 97 July 14, 1918 June 03, 2016 Nina Marie Chastain died June 3, 2016, in Milwaukie of natural causes. She was born July 14, 1918, in Wamic, to Joel and Laura Chastain and raised on the family ranch in Tygh Valley. She was a hard worker, very athletic and she excelled on the girls basketball team while in high school in Maupin. At the age of 20, Nina began her education at Monmouth College. She married Verel Teschner; they were married 16 years and had two daughters, Tonya and Jola. Nina became a single parent when she divorced and was determined to be an independent business woman. Her tenacity and determination could be intimidating at times, but she was never afraid of anything and had the courage most women of the time were not allowed to have; she forged ahead with whatever came before her. A woman ahead of her time, she began her business career by getting her real estate license in 1956. The eternal business woman, she started purchasing real estate and became a broker. Nina came up from small beginnings and built her own business empire through hard work and the self-confidence to believe she could! She always had a knack for making money and loved it! She had an unlimited amount of energy and it was infectious. Nina never minced words; when she had something to say, she was straight up front with her opinions. This, in an era where women were not allowed opinions of their own or have their own goals, but Nina was not that kind of woman. She was competitive in a mans world of business and she succeeded. Nina was told she had cancer twice and although the diagnosis was devastating, Nina greeted cancer with the same determination and energy she did everything. After chemotherapy and radiation treatment, Nina was cancer free, another battle won! She had a stroke Dec. 14, 2010, at the age of 92 and had continued working up until that time. Nina survived, as she always had! At the age of 94, Nina caught the flu and it was thought she wouldnt live through it, however she once again rallied. Nina was placed in an assisted living facility after her stroke and lived there until her death. Nina passed away peacefully with her daughter, Jola and granddaughter, Rondee, by her side. She is survived by her daughters, Jola Buffington and Tonya Stebbeds; grandchildren, Rondee Balfour, and Cray and Dustin Jennings; and eight great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 14, 2016, at The Monarch Hotel, 12566 S.E. 93rd Ave., Clackamas, just off of I-205.

Read about your mom in Sunday's paper. She was a remarkable woman and did have a long wonderful life! I have thought of you many times & wonder how everyone was. I tried to find you about a year ago could find nothing in phone listing, did not know your last name and with cell phone so many do not have land lines. Even looked on FB but any name combos I tried did not come up to be you. Please know we are thining of you and Tonya. Know even when you know it is time, it is not easy when the finality of life comes.
Mom & Dad still in house at Tygh, but getting harder everyday, so time there limited. Dad very, very frail with health issues(personality and temperament hard as ever) & Mom slower everyday. Take care. Jana [email protected] 541-980-2885
