I had the pleasure of working with Bob while he was at the Port of Portland working on the Columbia River channel deepening project. Early in that project we joked that it wouldn't be finished until we both had retired. That turned out to be the case. Bob was a great leader and was skilled at keeping the various ports marching in the same direction early in the project ... a lot like herding cats, given the ports' diverse interests. I never saw Bob show the slightest hint of despair as he faced and surmounted one challenge after another in shepherding the channel project along. It was a rare privilege to work with someone of Bob's caliber. My sincere condolences to Peggy and the rest of Bob's family.
