Walter Dachsel Obituary

Dachsel, Walter Paul 85 Dec. 24, 1926 Nov. 08, 2012 Walter Paul Dachsel passed away peacefully on Nov. 8, 2012 surrounded by his loving wife and caring family members. A life-long resident of Portland, he was born on Dec. 24, 1926 to his parents, Walter G. and L.V. Dachsel. As a young child growing up in Portland, Walt attended Hosford Grade School. He went on to graduate in 1944 from Benson High School, where he enjoyed math and drafting. Even though he was only 17 years old, Walt enlisted in the U.S. Navy to help in the war effort. Walt was granted an honorable discharge in July 1946. He then attended Multnomah College for two years and went to work full-time for his father's remodeling business. Walt became a very proficient remodeler and home builder in the Portland area. He married Mary Mildred Block, the love of his life, on Feb. 16, 1952 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. In 1962 Walt was hired as a carpenter by the Neil Kelly Company. He quickly rose to become one of their most reliable and valued employees. Walt always demonstrated a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility to produce the best project for clients. Walt went full-time with his own company "Dachsel Construction" in 1975. After retiring in 1989, he continued to do remodeling projects. Traveling to Hawaii and Mexico with friends were special experiences for Walt. He embraced life fully and loved to play poker and pinochle, go on long walks, watch Ducks football and engage in conversation. His family was most important to Walt and he never stopped caring for them. Walt was a wonderful neighbor to others in the Laurelhurst area where he lived for over 50 years. He was a dedicated caregiver for his wife, Millie, and an active member of a support group for the caregivers of stroke victims. Walt is survived by Millie, his wife of 60 years; daughters, Sandra Hickey (Gordon) and Nancy Wiedenmann (Kurt); sons, Steven Dachsel (Jane), Michael Dachsel (Tye) and David Dachsel. In addition, there are 10 grand-children and several great-grandchildren. A special thanks to Providence Hospice and the staff at Miramont Pointe for their care and support. A private interment will be held at Willamette National Cemetery.

Memories and Condolences
for Walter Dachsel

Not sure what to say?

Walt and Millie were two of the best people a young man could ever meet and interact with. I had the pleasure of going to school with there youngest son David. Over the years Walt always had plenty of patience for the shenanigans David and I pulled. Millie always made sure we had food to eat and place to relax. Over the years I would meet the rest of the Dachsel family and you could always tell Walt and Millie did a great job as parents or as good as anyone can expect given the fact that there is no manual for parenting. Walt was a master carpenter and was always willing to lend a hand or give some expert advice. I will miss him but given that David and I are still good friends after 30 plus years I can enjoy the great traits he learned from his father and mother.+

I want to extend my sincere condolences to the entire family. Walter was such an outgoing sincere person with a heart of gold. He befriended my older brother Ron in the absence of my Dad and his support and friendship was invaluable. My heart goes out to Millie and the Dachsel clan.

Although I only knew Walt for a few short years, (through our men's support group) I must say it was an honor to be his friend.
All through life we have many "acquaintances", "friends", and "good friends" but rarely do we find someone of Walt's caliber who is such a good honest human being.
When my porch needed extensive work to accomadate my wife's wheelchair, Walt was right there untill the job was done....and done right.
He helped me in other ways (never accepting compensation)and I was not alone. Others benifited from his kindness as well.
Walt accomplished a lot in his years, and (rightfully) was proud of what he had done. However, it was evident that his greatest source of pride was his family.
I'm sure they in turn have a huge feeling of pride for him as well.

I remember Walts' smile. He and Millie always made time to sit down and chat if you dropped in. I dropped in a lot back in the day when Joan lived on the street and then Melissa. The whole family was fun to be around! I'm so sorry for your loss and thanks for the memories.

I remember Walt fondly from the days - forty plus years ago - when he had the unenviable task of managing myself and my teenage brothers as we learned how to work. We were awfully obnoxious I think, but he always treated us well and with plenty of patience - all the while chewing on the ever-present cigar!
