VERY GOOD SCHOOL TEACHER ,I HAD HIM AT HOWARD MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER SCHOOL 1988. JONATHAN MCLEOD ORLANDO ,SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS

January 12, 2015

I was sitting here on December 24, 2014 listening to Christmas music and was just thinking about what a positive impact Mr. Rule had on my life. He had the enthusiasm of Zig Ziglar when it came to math.

His lessons were very interesting to many of us, focusing on practical applications of math to everyday life, from financing our first car to buying the best insurance policy.

Mr. Rule was a wonderful man who would find sponsors among his network of friends to fund an annual math contest, and awarding $100 to the winner (that would be over $500 today). I came in third, but Mr. Rule let me know I could have done better (and he was right).

He also taught us life lessons, from dealing with bullies to being good citizens. I recall one day, he saw me making out with a girl at the shopping mall and called us over to give us a little fatherly advice :)

A few years later, when I had earned a top secret clearance and had graduated from Spanish at the Defense Language Institute I had the opportunity to thank him for his lessons.

Today, I lead worldwide applied analytics for companies like eBay, Oracle, and British Airways and have enjoyed many opportunities in life as a result of Mr. Rule instilling in us a love of learning and for practical application of math in our lives.

In my son's school, the overwhelming majority of teachers are women, and that's unfortunate for kids without a father in their life. Male role models like Mr. Rule are so important to boys in particular that there should be a national initiative to fill the gap in public K-12 with men like Mr. Rule.

While your lessons helped pave the way for my successful career, the greatest reward is reflected in me being a better father to my 12-year old son Jack.

God bless you Mr. Rule, we love you and continue to be inspired by your example.

Mr. Rule gave new depth to the term "teacher". My experience with him was at Evans HS, where he co-taught history to a large class. The environment had all the makings for the students to be disruptive, yet, when he was at the small podium in front of the class, we listened, participated, and were, in spite of ourselves, learning. I attribute this magic to Mr. Rule, who had the learning/teaching sparkle in his eye and the wisdom to know when and how to apply it. Rest in peace, Mr. Rule, and thank you for the spark that generated a lifetime of learning.

I first met Mr.Rule at Wm.R.Boone High School,1978,getting tutored in fractions & percentages. I remember being amazed at his ability to make math FUN! He made everything seem so exciting and I knew he truly cared about me 'getting it' After tutor classes I made sure to get him as my math teacher for 1979,my Senior Year. Some people are truly blessed to become teachers...that was Mr.
Rule!! And I am so glad to have met such a kind and caring soul. Your legacy lives on in your family and all the lives that you have touched. Rest in Peace.

As a former colleague of George Rule at Boone High School, I can attest to the accuracy of what so many have said here about his caring concern for students, his wonderful knack for innovative teaching strategies, his school spirit nd general enthusiasm, his tremendous success helping students who had difficulties learning, especially math. He lived to be helpful and kind, and was always a humble man in spite of his abilities and accomplishments.

Shortly after we were married, my wife was forced by circumstances, as often happens in education, unfortunately, to teach math, a subject in which she had no background, except for the usual undergraduate courses. George came to the rescue and spent time sharing resources and strategies so that she could do her job. She survived it, mainly because of his help.

To the extent that any comfort can be taken in the loss of a loved one, surely the many loving tributes from his former students should provide some. He was an exemplary teacher and a wonderful person. Elaine and I are happy to have had him in our lives, we are saddened by his loss, and we send our sincerest condolences to Bruce and Paula and their extended families.

I remember Mr. Rule from my days at Evans HS in the early 60s.

While I have no specific stories to pass along my memories of him involve deep respect. He was one of the good guys in the formation of our futures.

To his family go my sympathies and thoughts about their feelings at a time like this. May your loved one now rest in peace with his wife and those of his life who have preceded him to the hereafter.

God bless and look over his loved ones during this time of sadness.

What a tremendous legacy Mr. Rule has left. He has thousands of adults from Evans, Oak Ridge, Boone, and Howard that learned lifelong lessons from a truly caring teacher. God Bless You, "MR RULE".

At Evans H.S. in the 1960's, this fine man taught me Americanism V. Communism which was mandatory for graduation in 1964.
He energized our pre-game pep rallies and got the student body pumped up with school spirit and pride during assemblies in the gymnasium.

Several years ago during a chance encounter, I saw the Mr. Rule I'd known from 40 years prior at a local bank--he looked no different.

We chatted for awhile but he did not recall me among a plethora of students he's taught over the years but we shared that historical relationship of student and teacher.

The conversation eventually shifted to my sharing how one of my daughters was struggling with H.S. math. At once, George Rule volunteered to personally tutor her. He evaluated the skills she lacked and determined that she was a "visual learner". He formulated an instructional plan and designed aids which he brought to the home.

He arranged tiles on the floor for her to visualize relationships that finally lead to her understanding of fractions, percentages, and multiplication. It was brilliant in its simplicity and my daughter overcame her math anxiety.

George Rule refused any compensation for doing this. It was his Christian conviction that we should share our talents to help others. The Lord has now called this wonderfully gifted man home—but his memory is alive! We owe homage to his memory. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Paula, I'm so sorry for your loss. You had wonderful parents. I will always remember your mom and how dedicated she was to us during our girl scout years. I never was in your dad's classes but I remember wishing that I was. His students told stories about having 'fun' while learning. What a concept - right? I hope that your memories help you find comfort.

My name is Joseph p. Mullins boone high school grad 1981 He was the best business math teacher he made it so simple and fun. He was way ahead of his time with the way he made math so easy to understand especially when you are subtracting or adding numbers. Funny now as an adult the infomercials are trying to sell what he was teaching in the late 70's early 80's at boone high school. I graduated in 81 and Mr Rule YOU WERE THE BEST OF THE BEST!!! I have never forgotten you and you will always be forever etched into my life and never forgot. You made my life easy and great thank you. As a result of Mr Rule You made life simple . Thank you...

Paula and Brad ... if it is possible for Heaven to be even better, it is now with George around to add a smile to every face, to give everyone a reason to be positive and to make sure everyone he meets feels important. I share your loss and hope you will be comforted by knowing he had such an impact on so many. His belief in young people set so many on the right path. I am grateful he was in my life.

George was one of the finest people and best teachers I have known. I first met him when I was a young teacher at Howard Junior High. We earned a little extra money administering civil service tests on Saturday mornings a couple of months per year.
He always reminded me of Paul Harvey because of his way of telling a story and positive can do attitude in life and teaching.
He had a special knack for reaching the kids who disliked math or weren't good at it. His ability to do that was unsurpassed. While he taught at Boone and I was at Howard ,our assistant principal hired him for summer school for several years because he was so good at reaching students who struggled with math.
His was a long and very fruitful life and helped so many people and was very proud of his late wife and two children and their spouses. Rest in peace,George. My condolences to his children. He was a great man.
