I was just 17, a high school senior and just finished a high school track event at UConn in the spring of 52. I had a 46 Pontiac and some older friends who were attending UConn, wanted a ride home. We lived in Bridgeport, Conn. On the way home they talked me into taking them to NYC to make the jazz scene. They were surprised I was into jazz. After getting my Mom's approval, off we went. Birdland, Bop City and others. And then the 52nd. St Club. That is where I saw Oscar, Ray and Ed Thigpen. I heard alot of Oscar, but to see those fingers move across those ivory keys like lightening was amazing. That is one of my most fond memories of Oscar. He will be missed. He is already missed. Farewell Oscar. Thanks for the memories and the music you left us to remember you.

I play and improvise on Oscar's compositions to this day.
