Harold J. Cooper Jr., 72, of Sanford, died Tuesday morning, July 10, 2012, after a long illness at Covenant Healthcare - Cooper Campus in Saginaw. He was born on Dec. 2, 1939, in Cheboygan, son of the late Harold J. Sr. and Beatrice (Ross) Cooper.
Harold proudly served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958-1962. He devoted his professional life to public service. He served with the San Bernardino County Sheriff Dept. for 10 years in California; Chief of Police in Merrill for three years and then being employed with General Motors Corporation, Brake Plant in Saginaw with their security, retiring after 18 years of service.
Harold was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting and carpentry. He also enjoyed many days with his dogs and geese at his Sanford home. He was a proud member of Coleman Masons #427.
Surviving are his children, Harold Jay Cooper of Hemlock, Nick (Michelle) Cooper of Merrill, Matt Cooper of Kingman, Ariz.; step-children, Mitch Resk of Merrill and Debbie Todd of Midland; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, James (Karen) Cooper of Sanford; and his girlfriend, Debi Huber and her family of Sanford. In addition to his parents, one sister and brother-in-law, Clydette (Elbert) Hyatt preceded him in death.
A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m., Friday, July 13, 2012, from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. Pastor Lynne Biddle of Christian Celebration Center will officiate, with burial of cremains to take place later in Midland Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Harold's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
