Back in the mid 1970s when Bill joined Holland & Knight, he was assigned to be our Exchange Bancorporation Legal Counsel. I was starting a department called Policies and Procedures so I was sent to meet Bill. Over the next 5 years or so, Bill and I worked together on Regulations and Legal Documents for the bank. What a pleasure it was to work with such a kind, respectful man. Over the years, Bill and I frequently ran into each other in the elevators or hall ways in the old Exchange Bank Building and then in our new NCNB Headquarters that his firm shared with us. I'll never forget the sweet stories about his kids he would share in the elevator some years later as we both arrived early for work. One day another gentleman who knew Bill joined us and Bill introduced me to him as his "first boss" at Holland & Knight. I know my jaw must've dropped because I had never even thought about the fact that to Bill, I was his first client at the firm. That was Bill though; always one to praise and build up others. He surely gave me a surprise that morning with that introduction and I am very proud to have known him for all those years... One of the kindest men I've ever known. Alex, Lexi, & Bert: You have my sincere condolences. I've also known Alex for many years; from working at the bank to later finding out she was a distant cousin from NC. I recall being in meetings with Alex when she was pregnant with the children. My heart breaks for all of you and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
