WEEKES, Leon M.
Leon M. Weekes, of Boynton Beach, passed away June 23, 2014 at the age of 88. Leon was born on May 4, 1926 in Atlanta, GA. He served in the Army in World War II, and upon discharge, attended Emory University where he received his degree in Economics. He soon met the love of his life, Harriett Sprayberry, and they were married in 1950. They moved to Delray Beach a few years later in 1953. Shortly after settling in South Florida, Leon founded Weekes & Associates Insurance in Delray Beach. He quickly became a leader in the industry, serving as the president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Palm Beach County, and director of the Florida Association of Insurance Agents. Leon's true passion was public service. He served on the Delray Beach City Commission from 1970-1978 before becoming mayor of Delray Beach from 1978-1982. In addition, he served as president of the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, president of the Delray Beach Board of Realtors, and president of the Palm Beach County Municipal League. He also served as a board member for the Economic Council of Palm Beach County, the Florida League of Cities, the Solid Waste Authority, and the South Central Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. His dedication to the community didn't stop there. Leon selflessly gave his time to several local non-profits as well. He served as president of the United Way of Florida, president of the Gulfstream Council Boy Scouts of America, chairman of the Mae Volen Senior Center, life director of the Drug Abuse Foundation of Palm Beach County, director of Old School Square, and board member for the Bethesda Hospital Foundation. Leon won countless awards during his career, including the Rotary Club's highest honor, the Service Above Self Award. The Boy Scouts also honored him with the Distinguished Citizen Award and the Silver Beaver Award, which is given to leaders who have impacted youth through their service. In 1989, the City of Delray Beach and Palm Beach County dedicated the "Leon M. Weekes Environmental Preserve" in recognition of his service. Leon enjoyed fishing trips with his sons, traveling with his wife, and spending time with his family. He was a member and vestryman at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Delray Beach. Leon is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Harriett; brother William F. Weekes (Julia) of Forston, GA; children Lee (Sheri) Weekes, John (Annette) Weekes, Greg (Pam) Weekes, and Gena Weekes Stephenson, all of Boynton Beach; grandchildren John, Jennifer, Ryan, Elizabeth, Kelsie, Allison, and Marisa; and eight great-grandchildren. There will be a visitation from 4:00PM to 7:00PM Thursday, June 26, 2014, at BOYNTON MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 800 W. Boynton Beach Blvd., Boynton Beach, FL. Funeral services will be held 10:30AM Friday, June 27, 2014, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 188 S. Swinton Avenue, Delray Beach, with the Very Rev. Kathleen P. Gannon, Curate, officiating. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach, FL 33444, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 188 S. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach, FL 33444, or The Volen Center, 1515 W. Palmetto Park Rd., Boca Raton, FL 33486 in his memory.

My sympathies to friends and family of Mr Weekes, I celebrate the life of a good man and mourning his passing with you. As a former employee I learned so much from him, loved his humor, and respected him for being one of the finest men I have ever known. I will always remember him telling jokes and phrases, for example: He was busier than a one armed paper hanger with the hives. I am a better person for having known him.
