My condolences to the Noble family.
America has lost a distinguished scholar, communicator, journalist, and humanist. I loved watching Like It Is on ABC-7 and I've learned so much African and African American history and the conditions and situations that have negative impact to the black community and yet there is hope, still. God bless you, Gil. You will be missed.
January 26, 2013
Mr. Noble conducted an excellent interview of Bob Marley, the best I've seen. A smooth, suave, and highly intelligent man, who brought people closer to the truth.
October 12, 2012
To the Noble family. I grew up with you in Montclair, NJ many years ago. I visited your home as a friend of the twins. I fondly remember the family and how Ms. Noble gave me my first introduction to Island living and Kingston Town. Although I've moved on in life, I remember how kind Mr. Noble was to me. I never forgot the family. I pray the entire family is coping with their loss and I will continue to pray for God's peace to be with you. Kim Jackson Ovesen

I attended the funeral today at Abyssinian Baptist Church. I saw people whom Gil Noble had asked me numerous times if I'd known. I felt as if I'd known them as some recounted the same stories he had shared with me. Gil Noble leaves a marvelous legacy to educate and uplift people for generations to come. He leaves a loving family, adoring friends and fans.. While he will be missed, because of what he leaves behind he will never be forgotten, but will forever live on in our minds and hearts. I imagine upon entering into the gates of glory he will here "Well done, good and faithful servant. Well done!"
April 13, 2012
I attended the pre-homegoing service for Brother Gil Noble at the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem last night.

His legacy and body of work will continue to inspire all toward preserving, defending and making our history.

Thank you to the Noble family for sharing this exemplary man and Griot with us.

I was a desk assistant at Eyewitness News in the summer of 1969 and Gil would occasionally take me on assignments with him. I still remember the recount for the Adam Clayton Powell/Charlie Rangel race when we went up to Harlem for the recount. He let me write up the sports and weather on Saturday night. I went to Wall Street instead of following his path. A great journalist and teacher. Great voice. May God give comfort to his family. He led a remarkable life and was truly a trailblazer.
April 10, 2012
I met him on two speaking occasions and was surprised to see that he was tall in stature but not surprised that he was majestic in his revelations. That's because he was and remains the only television personalty that would tell it "Like it is."

Thank Gil Noble for your dedication and devotion to our people for lifting us up when we needed it, for being the man to stand up to topics that were not popular and even controversial to mainstream media, you went about doing what you knew needed to be done. I remember meeting you and seated next to you @ the New York Black Educators organization when you were honored by them in the 70's. A soft spoken man with a powerful purpose and mission. Always watched your program. We will always miss you, however, began missing you when you took ill. May the Lord and the angels receive you in heaven and say job well done my good and faithful servant. Ajike Williams (Bronx,N.Y.)

Mr. Like It Is
Written for Gil Noble by Naz

Four decades telling it
Like It Is

 pillar we counted on
One without  word play

Mr. Like It Is

 portrayed,  relayed, conveyed
 precisely
Like It Is

Stayed, unswayed, unafraid

Mr. Like It Is

Gil called a spade a spade
 questioned air raids

Mr. Like It Is

 Persuaded the dismayed
Paraded the degraded
No band aid on slave trade
schooled both ex's,  masters and slaves

 Mr. Like It Is

 Exposed rather than evade
 need for free trade,
not over played  military blockades,  air raids
Sometimes outweighed and under played, still
Mr. Like It Is

 You made the Grade
Today, we parade
And serenade
 Mr. Like It Is
the
Noble One

Thank you for  interviewing countless numbers of Heads of State, politicians, civil rights leaders, entertainers,  and documenting the lives of  Dubois, Malcolm, Farrakhan, Fannie Lou, Powell, Robertson, and others; with you in the tube and me sitting, listening  intently, carefully and learning.
April 08, 2012
Perhaps no other television program was so aptly named. Like It Is is exactly how Mr. Noble told it. I may be amongst the youngest of the posters here but I found Mr. Noble to be a shining example of a strong, uncompromising, scholarly, regal black man. A true national treasure, Mike Wallace will get most of the pub in the following days but to me and many of us Mr. Noble held more significance. RIP and my condolences to his family.
April 08, 2012
You were like a fixture in my home on Sunday's. I will miss your honesty and forthrightness in journalism, that is so sadly missed today. God bless you and your family.

On Sundays when I left Church, I would always look forward to viewing Like It Is. From Malcom To Dr. Ben, Mr. Gil Noble was my Teacher my Mentor, the living breathing soul of America. He was my friend even though we never met in person. I loved this Great Man just as I love my family, for Mr. Noble was the embodiment of the most postive and proud spirit of Black Folk. His wonderful work touched so many and we will miss his voice, as there is yet still so much work to be done. May his Holy Soul Rest In that most peaceful place, forever more. Respectfully. Brian K. Wood

I could spot Brother Gil from a distance, at any Harlem gathering, for he was 'the tallest tree in the forest' of Broadcast-Journalism. Mr. "Burnt of Skin" in his fishers hat and safari jacket hunting stories of our struggle which he presented in a fashion that is unparalleled. Mr. Noble could be found Wednesday evenings in Newark, on the week-ends in Queens. Ever working, ever learning, ever honing his craft. Thanks again for the two - hundred dollars to feed the attendees at the Jobs Revitalization Conference. Thank you Noble Family for your sacrifices endured while you shared him with us. Our grief cannot match your grief, but allow us to join you in expressing our love and respect to our Champion Wordsmith who epitomized Dignity and Grace.

Mr. Noble....I really can't say enough to what you brought to myself and others growing up in the NYC area.

You make me look to another time where there were men to look up to and say to yourself that you want to be like them when you grow up.

I still find myself to this day feeling that way about you.

Much love from this Nigerian household whose table you always had a seat at every Sunday morning.

April 07, 2012
GIL NOBLE made his transition today, April 5, at around noon. In his 80 years on earth he left a noble legacy that no one will be able to match. Excellence was his standard, and he lived up to it with impeccable precision. He left a gold mine of Black History that will forever be a solid and trustworthy source of knowledge and inspiration to all who watched his programs on LIKE IT IS, and to all who in countless years to come will learn of his contributions to history in general and to Black History in particular. For more than forty years he has held forth with dignity and consistency, and against tremendous odds, and he never compromised his integrity as he remained faithful to his goal of telling it LIKE IT IS. His manner was always calm, dignified, and respectful as he set forth with unfailing regularity the accomplishments and struggles of Black people. All people of all races can look with pride upon the monumental work that Gil Noble has bequeathed to the world. In his early life, he took up the baton of "Excellence in Reporting" and he ran the race with grace and beauty until the time came when he had to lay his burden down. No one can walk in Gil Noble's shoes, nor should anyone even try.
I was privileged to appear on "Like It Is" on many occasions, and I am deeply grateful for his support of causes dear to my heart. We always enjoyed long telephone conversations together, sharing views on the challenges facing America and Black people in America.
May God grant him eternal peace and may the good that he has done live long after him. Grace and blessings upon his wife and loved ones.
April 07, 2012
Gil you are missed, we really love you. and your family. g.shelton

Gil Noble was a journalist and Human Rights advocate. He was not afraid of "stepping out of the box" not only for African Americans but for all people. He was a man of integrity who manifested profound empathy for any oppressed minority. He is a blessed and fortunate man who has left a legacy of information and history that would otherwise not be available to future generations. His uniquely dignified relational style and fierce truth seeking will be remembered by all he touched. I had the privilege of two conversations with him. He clearly spoke to me "LIKE IT WAS" at the time. Reflected appraisals did not concern him, he found giving voice to often unpopular and controversial issues more important. Gil Noble's voice sharing "LIKE IT IS" will echo in our minds forever. My condolences to his wife and family on their loss.
April 07, 2012
TO the Family of Gil Noble my utmost condolences to you. This was a man who truly love his people and was proud to be a BLACK AMERICAN AND INFORM EVERY RACE OF COLOR THE REAL DEAL. When I heard of Gil's stroke last year I have been praying for him and his family ever since. GOD BLESS THE NOBLE FAMILY - LOVE THE GREEN, ATLANTA, GA AND FORMER NATIVE NEW YORKER.

Gil Noble helped keep the world more just and fair for all of the oppressed. His sincerity and courage in presenting the truth was and is par excellence. He truly loved humanity. There will never be another television journalist as representative of what is needed to be a guardian angel of the information needs of the oppressed. The glorious parade of ancestors he joins will definitely be glad to comfort, greet and honor him. My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and fans. May ALLAH Bless you, Brother Gil Noble with exquisite peace and blessings. You have been an elegant example of human excellence that all who have not forgotten the struggle would do well to follow for the benefit of all sentient beings. You will truly be missed.

April 06, 2012
I was born in Central Ameriica. My journey has been a little different from that of most African-Americans. It was Gil Noble who taught me about Jazz, and about the contributions that African-Americans have made to history. It was he who first introduced me to Fannie Lou Hamer and the Mississippi Freedom Party he always gave me just enough to wet my appetite, to send me off to the library, in recent years to "Google".

I remember meeting him for the first time in 1969, when I and 17 other young women siezed the academic building at Manhattanville College. Mr. Noble came to the window of that building and interviewed us.

It was he who turned me on to the magnetism of Adam Clayton Powell,Jr., and the activism of Sammy Davis, Jr.

Gil Noble made my world better by being in it.

There will never be another Gil Noble. And that is unfortunate. Let us celebrate a giant. The Kenya Rx Nkhrumah family

My sympathies to Mr. Noble's family and friends. I often wondered what had happened to this warm TV personality, and, hardly would have believed that he was 80 years old.

My brothers and I periodically spoke of him because we remembered that his Sunday evening program always ended with Leroy Anderson's "Forgotten Dreams."

God speed, Gil!
