Alice; My interface with Mel on the Micro Devices project resulted in all Anderson DeBartolo Pan project team members commenting how smoothly Mel managed the project. We all agreed what a pleasure it was to work with him. Mary Lou and I still talk about you and Mel hosting of us @ the Tournment of Roses activities including the Cal Tech dinner, pep rallys, Christmas neighbourhood lights, parade and game. What a fabulous time we had with the both of you. Yes Mel was a giving person and we'll always remember and say a prayer TO him.

I had a rare meeting in Pasadena on Tuesday which ended early. Rather than head home to bet the traffic i decided to try and visit Mel. I hadn't seen him in about 27 years but had faithfully swapped Christmas letters every year. I called home to see if my wife could get me the address and or phone number. She was out. I thought i would try Google to see if i could find it. What popped up first was his obituary. My heart sank. I had to pull over and weep inside.

I met Mel in 1987 when i was assigned to the MDL project at JPL. Mel was great to work with and always appreciated hard honest work, because that's how he worked. It was a pleasure to work with him and i still to this day share the lessons learned and experiences from him and the MDL project.
Alice and family, If i so enjoyed Mel for 18 months, i can't imagine having him for a lifetime and losing him. My heart and prayers go out to you and the family. It has been fun keeping in touch for so many years and watching both of our families grow.
We always think we can "get to it later". Then it is too late and "later" will never happen. I'll have to wait for heaven where we'll all have new bodies. Praise God for that one!
May God's peace wrap around you during this time.

I just happened to be in Pasadena for a meeting this morning and it finished early. Rather than trying to beat the traffic I set out to locate Mel. I new i was close but called my wife to get his address (from Christmas cards received for the last 26 years!) I've been trying to get up there for some time to see Mel. My wive was out so i got on Google and found that he had passed a few weeks earlier. I pulled over as my heart sank!

I met Mel in 1987 when i was assigned to build the MDL building at JPL. Mel was great to work with. He greatly appreciated hard honest work, because that's the way he work. I don't ever remember him loosing his temper or acting anything other than professional. Always fun to work with. A great memory: Mel loved to come into our tailer where we always had cookie packs and coke. He would take one of each and sit down to review the events of the day. We were always scratching our heads trying to meet the ever changing needs of the JPL scientist. I remembering him say after one of our meetings with the user group, "There are two things i am very grateful for. One, that these guys are on our side (USA). Two, that i'm not one of them!" If you have work with these scientists you'll understand. I have shared numbers stories and lessons learned from Mel and the MDL project throughout my career. My heart still aches!
Alice and Family: I was only with him for 18-months and it was great. I can't imagine loosing him after a lifetime! My heart and prayers to out to you and your family.
But on the flip side, he did it right! By reading the Christmas letters and hearing how the family grew up and all the activities you all were involved in and the people touched…then live to a ripe old age. I was and many more were blessed by him. Yes it hurts, but i sure hope i follow in his footsteps.
God bless you all.
