Before Pat Tillman was a Cardinal, or a Sun Devil, he was a Charger. Long before ASU or the NFL knew his name, we were hearing about Pat Tillman. As a fellow Leland High School alum (although I’ll admit that was more than a few years before Pat was there starring on the football team and being named the Central Coast Section's co-player of the year), his tragic loss feels very close to home for me – like I’ve lost a member of my own extended family. It’s so strange to see my old campus on the evening news and for such a sad reason – our hometown in mourning. My deepest, heartfelt condolences go out to all of Pat’s family and friends during this sad time.

Pat was indeed a remarkable, remarkable man to my eyes, but it’s clear he did not consider himself any more remarkable than any other man or woman (most of them so very young) serving in the armed forces and put in harm’s way to fight for their country. They sacrifice so much – and far too many are making the ultimate sacrifice – for their country and for each and every one of us here at home. My thoughts are with the Tillman family, the families of all the fallen heroes and all of the families waiting for someone to come home. We are indebted to you.
