Jim was my boss when I was a janitor in Irvine in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was a truly wonderful and memorable man. I have never forgotten him. He treated everyone, however young or old, with absolute respect. Even as teenagers, we knew that Jim was a war hero, without him ever saying so. I drive by the former Pertec building that we used to clean for Jim, at the intersection of McGaw and Von Karman, almost every day. I always think of Jim. I think of Jim often. He had a great work ethic that he instilled in many young men over the years. As city manager of the city of Irvine, I often think about Jim and the respect he showed people. He was a great American.

Jim could light up a room with his smile and he always seemed to find something to smile about. A brave man who faced Life, I admired him for the joy he found in Life.
