As the then Senior Warden of the Church of the Nativity and St Stephen's in Newport, I had the honor to work with Duryea on a building project that linked our church and next door parish house. Constructed in different time periods, each building was in a different architectural style and of different materials. Duryea's solution beautifully blended the two styles and material types, with the end result so wonderfully adapted to the two original buildings and the setting that people often believed the resulting structure was conceived and built all in the same period.
During the project, each week, usually on a Wednesday, I met with Duryea and our Rector, Rev. Canon William Warne. Those meetings were pure joy for me - the opportunity to meet with such a wonderful man, so warm and always pleasant, who knew so much about his profession and had our interests uppermost in his mind throughout the project.
Later, when the project was completed and we held services to consecrate the new facilities, my wife and I had the chance to meet Pat and several of their children. What a lovely, joyful family.
God bless you Duryea and your whole family. If we could all take a page from this wonderful man's life and try to replicate it in our own lives, the whole would truly be a better place. I shall look forward to our next chat on the other side, my friend.
