Glenn Wert Obituary

Glenn J. Wert, formerly of Mt. Carmel, PA and Colonial Park, Harrisburg, passed away on February 12th in Greensboro, NC. He was 91.
Glenn is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Dawn (Knoebel) Wert, and three younger brothers, Blake Wert of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Carl and Arthur Wert, both of Elizabethtown. Mr. Wert was predeceased by his parents, James and Edith Wert, and a brother, Lowell Wert.
Mr. Wert is lovingly remembered as a selfless, supportive and devoted father by his three children, a son, Randall Wert (Cathy) of Vienna, VA, and two daughters, Legene White (Jeffrey) of Bloomington, IN, and Laurie Bober (Richard) of Greensboro. Six grandchildren join in remembrance of their Poppop.
Glenn was retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. He lived for 50 years in Colonial Park where he was known for selling hundreds of Christmas trees on his home's corner lot. He was a longtime member of Calvary United Methodist Church and was a past president of the Trustee Board. He was also a Mason and a member of Middletown Lodge No. 486.
Mr. Wert was proud of his U.S. Navy service in the Pacific theater during World War II and, with his wife, attended gatherings of the LCI National Association across the nation. He was always pleased when the Mids triumphed in the Army-Navy Game. When not touring about the country by travel trailer, Mr. Wert cultivated a prolific vegetable garden, favoring strawberries in particular. Family and friends marveled at the works of stained glass he created as a post-retirement hobby.
Plans for visitation or a service are incomplete at this time. In lieu of flowers, it is the family's wishes that memorial donations be made in Glenn's name to the Masonic Children's Home, One Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022. www.pennlive.com/obits

Thank you to everyone who has reminded us that our Dad and PopPop was a great man who touched many lives. We spent last weekend together, telling stories and looking at old pictures. Mother is doing very well because she realizes that her Glenn wasn't enjoying life any more. Blessings to you all. --Legene, Laurie, Randy, Dawn and 6 grandchildren

To Dawn and the kids--Sorry to hear of Glenn's passing---part of growing up was getting a tree from him! But I also remember his good nature and kind words whenever I saw him at Knoebels. His legacy will live on through all of you.

My sympathy to the Wert family on the passing of a great man. Besides remembering him as the father of my good friend, Randy, I bought Christmas trees from him and his wife, Dawn, spent time with his beautiful daughters and have one of his handmade stained glass ornaments that I have put on my Christmas trees for about 30 years now. He lived a full life and you have to be proud of him for all he has done for family and others. I didn't realize that he and Dawn lived in NC. That is where I am living now...outside of Raleigh. I still picture the house on the corner of Rutherford Road with the camper ready to go on the road. God bless you all ...Pam Ketner Lindsay

I didn't know Glenn, but I want to send my sympathy to Dawn Wert & family. I was one of Mrs. Wert's student teachers (from Shippensburg University) way back in 1971-72 at CD East. I now spend a good deal of time in the Harrisburg area and often pass by Rutherford Road and wondered if she still lived in the house across from the high school. I retired from teaching and now live in the Ft. Lauderdale area of Florida. All of my family is in PA, so I'm in the area often. One of her gifts to me (other than helping me learn how to teach) was a Christmas tree pin which I still wear, and everytime I wear it I think of her. I also remember Knoebel's Grove as well. My email address is [email protected] if she wants to get in touch. Again, my sympathy to all the Wert family at this difficult time. Rebecca (Beckie) Moyer Orlando

My name is Vivian (Davis) Maley, I'm so sorry to hear about Glenn. I was ome of the roller skating crowd at Kn.obels grove. At that time, I was married to "Mooney Boyer". I never knew Glenn lived in Harrisburg. I'm living here since 1949. We were friends in Mt.Carmel many t years ago. Glenn was a wonderful person. I was so surprised when I saw his obit. Please accept my deepest sympathy. My e-mail is [email protected]. May God bless you and your family at this time of sorrow.
