Helen McCann Obituary

Helen J. McCann, 98, of Carlisle died Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at the Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home, Carlisle.
Born June 27, 1914 in Scottsdale, she was the daughter of the late Morgan D. and Mildred M. Thompson Heastings and the widow of James McBain and Wayne K. McCann.
Helen was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Carlisle where she shared her love of music through singing and playing the piano. During WWII, she worked for the Red Cross. She was most proud of her work for the Pennsylvania Association of the Blind where she was known as the "Talking Book Lady." Helen did more than just deliver books, she often donated her time, the use of her car and the gas to operate it in order to make sure her clients who had quickly become her friends were safe and healthy and had their books!
Surviving are two nephews, John Castles (and wife Jimmy) of Carlisle and Lee Castles (and wife Isabel) of Boiling Springs; and two nieces, Carol Blakely of St. George, VT and Christine Tarbox (and husband Richard) of Radnor. Helen is also survived by her numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Morgan and Frank Heastings and two sisters, Ruth Castles and Grace Fry.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle with Rev. Jennifer J. McKenna officiating. Burial will be in Whitemarsh Memorial Park, 1169 Limekiln Pike, Ambler, PA at a later time.
