I became friends with her six years ago today on Facebook.

Miss Schmehl was one of those teachers you never forget. I had her for third grade at Harry S, and I now have a third grader of my own. We had recently talked about our third grade teachers at the dinner table, and I shared how much I absolutely loved that year of elementary school.

One of my fondest memories was her drawing a "straight" line on the chalkboard, and she said something like "I know that's the straightest line you've ever seen. Just remember I taught Mrs. Cosgrove how to draw lines!" Well it wasn't that straight and Mrs. Cosgrove was our art teacher. ;) My mom even commented how she knew I loved her. She was the first teacher I truly enjoyed at Salisbury, and I have friends who felt the same.

I am sad to see she is no longer with us. I will forever be grateful I was one of her students. She was one of a kind. My condolences to her family and friends. My son is Charlie Brown today for Halloween -- who knew it would be the day we say goodbye to you.

I know the Gasper-Schmehl Clan and love them all. Karen's little sister, Laurie, was my 3rd grade playmate before your move to Emmaus. I met little "Cholly", as Aunt Rose would say, and the older siblings later. Cavorting with Laurie, Joanie and Karen at various Hershey area digs. Always fun and laughter..and I mean LAUGHTER! If only Carol were along! Love all you folks~you're in my tho'ts and prayers! I'll miss Mass, but be graveside. 'Til we see each other again, be at Peace, dear Karen. Enjoy your first Christmas home with Jesus.

I worked as an IA at HST, with Karen , for many years. She loved her students, and they loved her. When they asked to do anything with can I, she would say, I don't know, can you? She wanted them to say, may I? There were always Jolly Ranchers galore.
She will always be remembered fondly.
