Norman Berlin Obituary


Norman D. Berlin, Jr., 89, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2017, at his home in Camp Hill. He was born on September 13, 1928 in Harrisburg, son of the late Norman D., Sr. and Catherine D. (Burris) Berlin.
A 1950 – B graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, VA, he was a Korean War veteran having served as a rifle platoon leader and rifle company Executive Officer in Co. L, 223d Inf. Regt. 40th Inf. Div. Among his decorations were the Combat Infantry Badge and a Bronze Star.
Upon return from active service, he joined the Active Army Reserve where he rose to the position of Battalion Commander, 1st Bn. 313th Inf. (Mech) and Brigade Operations Officer 157th Inf. Brigade (Mech). He retired as a Lt. Col. on December 30, 1996.
Norman worked for A.S. McCreath & Sons, Inc. of Harrisburg as a chemist and Officer Manager. Leaving A.S. McCreath & Sons after 34 years of service, he was next employed by Bowman-Mell & Co. of Harrisburg and then by Quaker City Chemical as a chemist and safety director. He retired from Quaker City on September 15, 2000.
In retirement, he enjoyed military history, Hershey Bears hockey, his four grandchildren and walking his Labrador, Melvin.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn Metzger Berlin of Camp Hill, Pa., a son, Scott Alan Berlin, his wife Karen Rose and their four children; Allison Berlin Ohl and her husband Peter of Meadville, Pa., Luke Gene and Mark Berlin of Titusville, Pa. and a second son, Alan Daniel Berlin of Carlisle, Pa.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held at his church, New Covenant Fellowship Church, 4500 Creekview Road, Mechanicsburg, Pa, 17050, on Saturday, October 14, 2017, 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be from 10-11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethesda Mission, P.O. box 3041, Harrisburg, Pa 17105 or to North Shore Animal League America, P.O. Box 9263, Central Islip, N.Y. 11722-9263 or to the Deacon's Fund at New Covenant Fellowship Church at the above address.
