Thomas J. Hanus, age 79, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2012 at his home. Born October 7, 1932 in Plymouth, PA, he was a son of the late John and Helen (Yatsko) Hanusovsky.
Tom was a 1950 graduate of Plymouth High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a 1956 graduate of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy and graduated from Northwestern University Traffic Institute. He went on to earn both a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Pennsylvania State University.
Tom retired as a Lieutenant in 1984 from the Pennsylvania State Police after 28 years of service. During his career, he worked as a patrolman, criminal investigator, educator who taught municipal police officers, labor relations director, Commander at Ebensburg and Rockview stations, and Director of the Preventive Services Division where he established one of the nation's first statewide community crime prevention programs. Following his retirement, Tom worked nearly 20 years as a security consultant and private investigator.
Tom was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Frank J. Kelly Memorial Lodge #62, and the Retired State Police Association of Pennsylvania. In his free time, Tom enjoyed attending his grandkids' various sporting, musical, and equestrian events; spending time with former classmates, Navy buddies, former state troopers, and close friends and family; watching Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football; and playing tennis and drums.
Surviving is his loving wife of 54 years, Kathryn (Hankey) Hanus; his son, Kevin and wife Beth of Mechanicsburg; his daughter, Pamela Rusanowsky and husband John of Kent, OH; his son, Thomas and wife Judith of Hockessin, DE; grandchildren, Sean and Katie Hanus, Nicholas and Michael Rusanowsky, and Hilary, Rebecca, and Veronica Hanus; his sister, Dolores Sheplock and husband George of Cary, NC; his brother, John and wife Dolores of Bristol, CT; as well as seven nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Saturday, May 19 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Interment will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. There will be a viewing from 5:30 to 8:00 PM Friday, May 18 at Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg.
