Bruce B. Winter
02/18/1922 - 08/01/2014
Bruce Burns Winter, 92, died August 1st, 2014 in Pensacola. He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn and daughter Heidi Winter and survived by three sons, Eric, Dugald and Todd, as well as five grandchildren. He passed while in his assisted living home at Creekside Senior Village under Covenant Hospice care.
Bruce was born in Orange, New Jersey and lived the last 44 years of his life in Florida. He enjoyed a successful career in real estate in Sarasota. He was terrific in helping others find exactly the right house. During these years, Bruce and Evelyn enjoyed an active social life centered around the pool, boat, tennis, or the beaches at Sanderling or Siesta. In retirement, Bruce was an active member of the Pine Shores Presbyterian Church, serving with the Meals on Wheels ministry.
Bruce served in the Army Air Force 448th Bomb Group during World War II, stationed at Seething Air Force Base, England. In 1943 and 1944, serving as navigator, he flew with the Eighth Air Force for the early B-24 Liberator bombing raids over Germany. During his tour of duty, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Bruce attended Williams College before the war and graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
After enjoying retirement years in Sarasota he moved to assisted living in Pensacola, to be closer to son Todd. In his last year, he struggled from the effects of Alzheimers and hearing loss, but was well reinforced by family and caregivers at Creekside Senior Village and the Veteran's Administration in Pensacola. Bruce was determined to remain engaged with reading and conversation, always interested in current events and the companionship of family and friends. He will always be remembered for his fond interest in people and in particular, the lives and activities of his children.
Services will be held in Sarasota at Pine Shores Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 13th at 3pm with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, Bruce's family encourages those wishing to honor his memory to consider the Heidi Winter Endowment at the University of Virginia. Bruce took pride in the endowment created for Heidi, and he would have been deeply honored and pleased to have his friends make contributions in his memory.

Having only met Mr. Bruce a couple of times I could tell he was a man of great character. His smile was infectious and his graciousness has been passed on to his children. What a great life he had that is so apparent in hearing some of the wonderful stores. I am so blessed to have met him.
Love and Prayers,
Sharon
