Norm was a firefighting brother and friend who lost his battle with cancer this week, with his family by his side in his home in Eugene Oregon. I had a chance to visit with Norm back in june , while driving up to Seattle. We talked about old times , shared some memorable calls we had been on together years ago, and had some frank conversation regarding his condition, and the mountain ahead of him, fighting for his life one day at a time. He showed me his special place upstairs , where he had placed his firefighting memorabillia on the wall, including some old Petaluma Fire Dept pictures and collectives from our era within the PFD. We both knew too well that his time was limited , but he showed incredible strength in the face of death.
I recalled how years ago when I was facing uncertainty during a career changing injury with a young family to support, Norm , a senior firefighter was there, supporting me , reassuring me that positive things would follow, that he had my back.
Norm spent his entire career rescueing others, trying to make a difference in this world, fighting for those in need. He fought many battles and saved lives.
Now Norm has fought perhaps his toughest battle , courageously , and he is gone......
Norm, thank you for everything, for having my back when times were tough , for being a brother to me, a friend.
Rest easy, my friend, I've got your back.
