I really wanted to write to Peter Falk's wife, the lovely Shera Danese, at the time of his death, but alas, I didn't, figuring that she would be dealing with a lot. But I have been thinking for a long time that I needed to put my thoughts somewhere.
I was in an airport when I saw that he had died.
I had the incredible pleasure of interviewing Peter Falk for my column with PEOPLE Magazine online some years ago. He was always one of my idols for a very special reason. I have an artificial eye as he did; but also, I'm a detective story and detective show fanatic. I practically know every Columbo episode by heart.
We had such a blast. Mr. Falk had me in complete hysterics with all of his stories throughout the whole interview. I told him about a MacMillan & Wife episode that was used on Columbo -- he was very surprised to hear that -- and I even sent him the tape of the episode. I remember that year I called him on his birthday.
What a gift he had, what a great legacy of entertainment he left this world. I was heartbroken to read of problems he had in the last few years. He is at peace now, probably breaking everybody up in heaven with his stories. I will treasure my time speaking with him always.
