I am so sorry to hear about John's passing. I only really knew him from the Civic but enjoyed his stories and insight-fullness. He really cared and it showed - you could tell he belong to the Greatest generation. He had so much pride in Penn Valley and seemed to have lived a wonderful life. May he rest in peace.

To John Newhall's survivors:

I was the most casual of acquaintances. A retired Haverford Prof, 84 yrs old, I live along the Nature Trail, where I first spotted John: the only person my age who looks ( looked) to be as strong & fit as myself. ( Altho he was bigger, and better looking ) We became locker room buddies at the Bryn Mawr College Pool, where we both worked out, and chatted. Family was of course a major topic - he loved you all! In recent months I had noticed, and regretted, his absence, , but only thought to check the obituaries just now. While my regret at his leaving cannot match r yours, I would simply note that the reach of a good man's life can be a long and wide one.

Sincerely, Roger Lane

I met John at the Cricket Library at Haverford College many years ago. Generations of Newhalls played cricket in Philadelphia and internationally from the 1850s on. John was generous enough to donate a number of cricket-related items to the Library where they are prominently displayed. We chatted several times a year at various events and both looked forward to the next time we'd talk. He was a warm, sincere person who will be missed by me and all who knew him.

I saw John infrequently after Williams where we on the swimming team, but it was a pleasure to see him and enjoy his warmth. I remember fondly the class gathering he and Jane hosted at their home in Maine in the early 2000s. It is sad to see him go.
