My wife Erica and I were deeply saddened to hear of Leonard's death. I was a Neuropath Fellow in the Path Dept from '85-'88 and AP Chief Resident from '86-'87. The Leonard we knew was really tough and really human. Erica and I lost our dog and best buddy in '85 and went out to dinner to mourn. When I went to pick up the check, the waiter told me that the couple across the room had paid. To quote Leonard from that evening " I don't know what's wrong, but you're my Resident so I pick up the tab". When I was Chief, the external Dept Resident review went very badly. I came out to the house on Sunday to talk it through with Leonard. Not only did he listen, but he apologized to the residents on Monday. I was not in the Dept when Leonard became ill but saw him intermittently through the years. The last time was at Lucy Rorke's retirement dinner. Even in a wheelchair, he was an unstoppable force.
I frequently tell my residents tales from the Leonard Days. Erica and I will miss him always.
