I was a little boy of 10 when my mother contracted tuberculosis and my brother and I had to go away to St. John's Orphanage Asylum for boys at 49th & Wyalusing AV in West Philadelphia One of my pleasant memories through life were the hysterical times spent with Sr. Mary David. Having grown up in Port Richmond myself, my aunts kept telling me to look up "Jeanie Karas." What a great nun she was. She spent so much time playing ball with us and running around the field in St. John's. I often wondered whatever happened to her and this week I saw her death notice. God bless her and all the young girls who gave their lives to God to take care of waifs like us. Many times people make fun of what we were taught in Catholic school but when I look back and saw how all these young girls gave up boys and lives of comfort I am so thankful and don't know where I would be in life today if not for their tremendous sacrifices. The sisters of St. Joseph were astounding and seemed so happy doing God's work. Sr. Mary David's cohorts in St. John's were Sr. Mary Esdras; Sr. Eileen Dolores, Sr. Claire Genevieve, Sr. Mary Francis, Sr. Marie Carmine, Mother Catherine Loyola, Sr. Finbar (Wow!), Sr. Mary Eggbert, Sr. Regina Marie, Sr. Lucia Marie, Sr. St. Zita (Infirmary), Sr. St. Carthage (Atilla the Hun), Sr. Helen Constance, Mother Materna, et al. I will never forget your sacrifice and will love you all forever. Thank you so much.
