TIMOTHY MURPHY Obituary

MURPHY
TIMOTHY F. "TIM"

Age 39, of Washington, DC, formerly of Devon, PA, on Nov. 2, 2018. Beloved son of Francis J. and Kathleen C. (nee Costello) Murphy; loving brother of Drew R. Murphy (Maki Onodera) and Matthew P. Murphy. An Eagle Scout, Tim graduated from Conestoga High School and received his BA from Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Governmental Admin-istration from the Fels Institute of the University of Pennsyl-vania. A year with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps helped form Tim's core values of a simple lifestyle and commitment to social justice. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Chaplains Assistant. A voracious reader, Tim loved travel, the beach, swimming and hiking. He went out of his way to help others, and cherished his family and friends. Tim started his career as a social worker, and transitioned into local government financial manage-ment. On receiving the highly competitive Presidential Manage-ment Fellowship, he moved in 2009 to Washington DC to work at the Department of Energy, where he worked in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Tim provided strong leadership in diverse roles in the Office and inspired his co-workers with his tireless enthusiasm and dedication to public service. Tim touched the lives of innumerable colleagues at the Department, who appre-ciated his dry sense of humor and willingness to lend an extra hand or a kind ear. He was a loyal advocate for his colleagues and friends, who said there was no one better to have in your corner. Tim was a strong supporter of Cooperative for Education, whose mission is to empower students to break the cycle of poverty in Guatemala through education. Tim funded twelve years of education for four students, three of whom graduated from high school. He also sponsored classroom reading programs, helping more than 60 students learn to read. Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation, Monday, Nov. 12, 2018, 9:30 to 10:50 A.M. at St. Monica Church, 635 First Avenue, Berwyn, PA 19312, followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 11 A.M. Interment SS Peter and Paul Cem., Springfield, PA. A Memorial Service will be held in Washington, DC on the evening of Nov. 14th, at 7 P.M. at 300 "M" SW, Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to the Cooper-ative for Education at https://www.coeduc.org/give/; or a charitable service organi-zation of your choice.
