My heart and prayers go to Rosa Lee and family at the time of Doc's homegoing.
I remember meeting Doc and Merle in Stillwater, OK at a Bluegrass & Old Time Music Festival in 1972. It was before I was honorably discharged from the US Air Force in Altus, OK. An officer friend of mine and I stayed in the home of a professor and his family and had the opportunity to meet Doc and Merle and other musicians.
As a Born-Again Christian, Doc's walk with the Lord Jesus was a blessing for me. I wrote to him years ago after the release of his album, On Praying Ground, that is still one of my favorite recordings.
While I cannot flat pick as accurately and decisively as Doc and Merle did, I still play my vintage Martins and a Bourgois guitar; I'm more confortable using finger-picking.
Know that your Doc was a very special man, a solid Christian, and incredible folk/bluegrass/country guitarist and singer. His life reflected the in-dwelling presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ. He's dancing with the angels and saints in glory. My late wife, Maxine, who passed in 12/08 is there also. She played guitar, autoharp and Mt.Dulcimer.
Love always in Jesus to you all,

Dr. Joe DeLong

I thank heaven for the gift of Doc Watson. I heard him give his powerful testimony early one Sunday morning at Merlefest. My heart goes out to his family.

When I moved to Deep Gap, I didn't expect to be neighbors with a great musician. But I was fortunate. Thank you for your music and kindness to my family, neighbor!
