DOROTHY P.
RHODES, 96
DETROIT, MI. - Dorothy P. Rhodes, of Detroit, Michigan, and Winter Haven, Florida, passed away from natural causes on March 28, 2012 at Sterling House of Winter Haven, with her husband, Bob, by her side. Dorothy and Bob moved from Michigan to Winter Haven in 1977.
Dorothy was born in Detroit, Michigan to Fred and Florence Pease. She had one sibling, a younger brother. Dorothy's parents and younger brother predeceased her when she was only 3 years old. She was raised by her grandparents. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in the early 1930s and became a Detroit elementary school teacher. She taught kindergarten and first grade. Those students became the children that she and her first husband, who predeceased her, would never have.
She is survived by her loving husband, Bob, to whom she has been married for 37 years, and her step-children, Dorothy and Kip (Michigan), Elizabeth and Doug (Texas), Paul and Beth (Michigan), David, (Michigan), who predeceased her in 2006, Nancy and Steve (Michigan), and John and Melissa (Arizona). She is survived by nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by friends in Florida and all over the United States.
Dorothy will best be remembered as one of the most devoted animal lovers any of us knew. Her dogs and cats were her family as well. She rescued many animals and gave them a home. When she became ill in 2009 and had to leave her home, she found a home for her cats at Caboodle Ranch, a ranch in northern Florida run by a devoted cat lover. Dorothy also enjoyed bird watching and other Sterling House residents' pets who stopped by to give her a friendly greeting.
Dorothy also spent much time corresponding with family and friends. She had beautiful penmanship and enjoyed clipping articles of interest to send to friends and family. She also loved her evening routine of watching the nightly news, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune. She read the newspaper every day and kept up with current events.
Per Dorothy's wishes, her services were private and she is laid to rest at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. A memorial service is planned for later in April.
The Family wishes to say a special thank you to all the wonderful staff at Sterling House and Good Shepherd Hospice for their loving care of Dorothy.
